Visitors can use the main menu to find your most important pages, services, products, or posts, and can quickly find their way around your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In WordPress, you can create menus yourself, add pages, change their order, create submenus, and remove individual items again. What the menu management looks like, however, depends on the <strong>WordPress theme<\/strong> ab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With classic themes, management is usually done via <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong>. In contrast, modern block themes use the <strong>Website Editor<\/strong> and the navigation block. Therefore, we will show you both variants in this guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Briefly explained:<\/strong> If you are using a classic WordPress theme, you will usually find the navigation under <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong>. With a modern block theme, you open <strong>Design \u2192 Editor<\/strong> and edit the navigation of your website there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a WordPress menu?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A WordPress menu is a structured collection of links that allows visitors to access different areas of your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a typical main menu of a corporate website could be structured like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About us<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>References<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blog<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On larger websites, individual menu items can in turn contain sub-items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under <strong>Services<\/strong> for example, the following entries could appear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Web design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Web hosting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WordPress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates a hierarchical navigation that allows visitors to easily explore even extensive websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What content can be used in a WordPress menu?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A WordPress menu does not have to consist exclusively of pages. Depending on the installation and the plugins used, different types of content can be included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This includes, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Categories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>individual links<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WooCommerce Product Categories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>additional custom post types<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which choices are displayed depends on your WordPress installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where can I find the menu management in WordPress?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an important difference here between classic WordPress themes and modern block themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a <strong>classic theme<\/strong> do you normally find:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a <strong>Block Theme<\/strong> this menu item might not exist. Instead, navigation is done via:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Design \u2192 Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you do not know which theme is active on your website, you can usually find this out under <strong>Design \u2192 Themes<\/strong> check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We explain how to log into the WordPress administration at <a href=\"\/en\/help\/wordpress\/wordpress-adminbereich-aufrufen\/\">WordPress Login: How to log in to the admin area<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a WordPress menu with a classic theme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are using a classic theme with traditional menu management, you can create a new menu directly in the WordPress admin area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create new menu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to your WordPress admin area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the function to create a new menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assign a meaningful menu name, for example <strong>Main navigation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <strong>Create menu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then add the desired pages and other menu items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assign a display location provided by the theme to the menu if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the menu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The internal menu name is primarily intended for your administration. Visitors usually do not need to see this name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a menu item?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classic WordPress themes can define various locations where a menu can be displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the theme, these can be called, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Primary Menu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Main menu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Header menu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Footer menu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobile Navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondary Menu<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which menu locations are available is determined by the active theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One theme can have only a single position, while another supports multiple different navigation areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> A created menu is not necessarily displayed automatically on your website. With classic themes, you often also have to define the position provided by the theme where the menu should appear.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add pages to a WordPress menu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you have created a menu, you can add existing WordPress pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add page to menu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the desired menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open in the left panel <strong>Pages<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mark the desired pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <strong>Add to menu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The selected pages will then appear in the menu structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrange the entries in the desired order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <strong>Save menu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a required page does not exist yet, you should create it first. We explain how this works in our guide <a href=\"\/en\/help\/wordpress\/create-wordpress-pages\/\">Create new pages in WordPress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change the order of the menu items<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order of the entries can be changed by drag and drop in the classic menu management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do this, click on a menu item, hold down the mouse button, and drag it to the desired position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if your menu currently looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About us<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">can you just rearrange the entries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About us<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Save the menu afterwards so that the new order is applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create submenu or dropdown menu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress supports hierarchical menus. This allows you to nest one menu item under another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Services\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Web design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Web hosting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether these sub-items actually appear as a classic drop-down menu on the website depends on how the theme is displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create a submenu in a classic theme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add all required menu items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drag the desired sub-item under its parent menu item.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move it slightly to the right until WordPress shows the indentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat this for further subitems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the navigation on your website afterwards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the indentation, WordPress recognizes that the entry in question is a sub-item of the menu item above it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many levels should a menu have?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically, WordPress can also manage more complex menu structures. However, that doesn't mean you should use as many levels as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A navigation like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Products \u2192 Software \u2192 Security \u2192 Email \u2192 Spam filter \u2192 Settings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">quickly becomes confusing for visitors and is difficult to use on smartphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For standard corporate websites, the simplest and most intuitive navigation is usually the better solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Practical Tip:<\/strong> If you need several nested levels for a menu item, first check whether your website's information architecture can be simplified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rename menu item without changing the page title<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very useful WordPress feature is the ability to set the visible name of a menu item independently of the actual page title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a page could be titled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Professional web hosting for Swiss companies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the main menu, this text would probably be too long. There you can simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Web hosting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a classic menu, you open the relevant menu item and change it <strong>Navigation label<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The actual title of the page remains unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does the navigation label change the URL of the page?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only change the navigation label of a menu item, the destination address of the linked page remains unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is important because it allows you to use short and understandable menu names without having to change the page title or the URL slug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add custom link to WordPress menu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every navigation destination needs to be a WordPress page. With a custom link, you can include practically any valid web address in your menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For classic themes, you can find this under <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong> normally the area <strong>Individual links<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There you enter the complete destination address and the desired link text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be useful, for example, for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an external website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a separate customer center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an external booking platform<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a documentary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>another subdomain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Check individual links with special care. WordPress cannot know if you made a typo in a manually entered external address.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create a link to a specific area of a page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also link a menu to a specific section of a page. For this, so-called <strong>Anchor links<\/strong> used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a destination address can look like this, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/deine-domain.ch\/hosting\/#preise\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When loading, the browser jumps directly to the element with the corresponding ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is practical for longer landing pages, for example, when a menu item needs to lead directly to prices, features, or a contact area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add categories to the WordPress menu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your website has a blog, you can also integrate categories into the navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blog could have categories such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>WordPress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Web hosting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors are taken to the respective archive page with the assigned posts via a category link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We explain how categories are structured and used in our guide <a href=\"\/en\/help\/wordpress\/create-wordpress-categories\/\">Creating categories and subcategories in WordPress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I cannot see the \u201eCategories\u201c section or other content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the classic menu management, certain areas may be hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If, for example, you cannot find categories, certain content types, or advanced menu options, check the <strong>View settings<\/strong> at the top of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, depending on your WordPress configuration, you can display additional elements for menu management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove menu item<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a link should no longer appear in the navigation, you can remove it from the menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove menu item in a classic theme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the correct menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the desired menu item.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <strong>Remove<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the menu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This merely causes the <strong>Menu item<\/strong> Removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The underlying page, post or category is not deleted as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> \u201e&quot;Remove from the menu&quot; and &quot;Delete page&quot; are two completely different actions. If you simply no longer want a page to appear in the navigation, you don&#x27;t need to delete the page itself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when a linked page is deleted?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you delete a page, you should also check the navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the constellation, an old menu item could otherwise lead nowhere or be marked as invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not only unpleasant for visitors, but can also generate unnecessary internal 404 errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We explain how to correctly edit and delete pages at <a href=\"\/en\/help\/wordpress\/edit-delete-wordpress-pages\/\">Edit or delete pages in WordPress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Display menu in a different position<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With classic themes, you can often assign a menu to different theme positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, an existing menu could be used as the main navigation, while a second menu appears in the footer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the theme, the assignment is made directly under <strong>Design \u2192 Menus<\/strong> or through a separate section for menu items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the available positions are defined by the theme, the name and number can differ significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I create multiple WordPress menus?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.
