In the process, the existing content is exported from WordPress.com and then imported into a self-hosted WordPress installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The switch gives you more control over the technical environment of your website. With a self-hosted WordPress installation, you can manage WordPress yourself within the limits of your hosting package, use themes and plugins, and have much more freedom in deciding the structure and functions of your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Briefly explained:<\/strong> While WordPress.com and a self-hosted WordPress website both use WordPress, they are not the same hosting model. When switching, therefore, a user account is not simply transferred. The new WordPress installation is set up with the hosting provider, and the existing content is subsequently migrated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Difference between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The designations often lead to confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WordPress.com<\/strong> is a hosted service where the technical platform is provided and managed by WordPress.com or Automattic, respectively. Which features are available depends, among other things, on the plan used there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a <strong>self-hosted WordPress installation<\/strong> WordPress software is installed with a web hosting provider instead. This gives you significantly more control over the WordPress installation and the associated hosting environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CURIAWEB provides the hosting infrastructure, while you can manage your WordPress website yourself within the limits of your hosting package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why switch from WordPress.com to self-hosting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There can be various reasons for a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical reasons include, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>more control over the WordPress installation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>free selection of suitable WordPress plugins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more freedom with themes and customizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>own hosting access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>direct access to files and database<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>custom email addresses under the domain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more options for custom functions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WooCommerce or other extensive extensions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more control over backups, PHP and technical settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether a switch makes sense depends on your requirements. For a very simple website, WordPress.com may be sufficient. However, if more technical and design freedom is needed, a self-hosted WordPress installation can be the more appropriate solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is actually transferred during the switch?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a classic WordPress.com export, primarily the website's content is exported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the available content, this may include, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Posts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Categories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keywords<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Author information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>References to media files<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>additional content data supported by WordPress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the export is not equivalent to a complete copy of the entire WordPress.com system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> A WordPress export is not a complete server backup. Hosting settings, platform features, certain design settings, or features available exclusively on WordPress.com do not automatically transfer to an identical self-hosted website as a result.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take inventory before moving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you begin the migration, you should take a close look at the existing website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note or check in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>which pages are available<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which posts have been published<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which categories and tags are used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which domain the website uses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which theme is being used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which functions are required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether forms are available<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether external services are integrated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the website is already indexed by search engines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which important URLs are currently used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This inventory will help you recognize later if anything is missing on the new website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Custom domain or WordPress.com address?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For planning the migration, it is crucial to know the address where your previous website can be accessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a WordPress.com website can use an address in the following format:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>meinewebsite.wordpress.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, an existing domain can also be used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>www.meinewebsite.ch<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two initial situations differ significantly in later domain and redirection planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you are already using your own domain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are already using your own domain on WordPress.com, it can generally also be used for the new self-hosted website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve this, the domain will later need to technically point to the new hosting or be managed accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How exactly the transfer takes place depends on where the domain is registered and how its DNS settings are currently configured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Do not change the DNS settings of a live domain too early. Set up the new WordPress website first and check it as much as possible. Only after that should the domain be switched to the new environment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If a wordpress.com address is used<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does your website currently use exclusively an address like<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>meinewebsite.wordpress.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, do you need your own domain for the new self-hosted website if it is to be operated independently of WordPress.com?.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>www.meinewebsite.ch<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old WordPress.com address doesn't simply belong to the new hosting and therefore cannot be transferred like a custom domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prepare new WordPress installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the existing content can be imported, you need a new WordPress installation on your hosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This should basically work before you begin the actual content migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Domain or temporary accessibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WordPress installation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HTTPS or SSL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Admin access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>basic WordPress settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterwards, the migration of the existing content can be prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Export content from WordPress.com<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress.com provides an export function for website content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact user interface may change over time. Look for the website content export feature in your WordPress.com site administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the scope and available selection, you can export the desired content or the complete supported content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress generates an export file in WordPress's own exchange format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should save this file on your computer and keep it until the move is successfully completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a WXR file?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the export and import of WordPress content, the <strong>WordPress eXtended RSS<\/strong>-format, short WXR, used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The corresponding export file usually has the file extension:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>.xml<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It contains structured information about the exported WordPress content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the XML file is not a complete copy of the web server and should not be confused with a full website backup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do not edit the export file manually<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a normal move, you should not unnecessarily modify the generated XML file with a text editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incorrect modifications can cause subsequent imports to no longer function correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, keep an unmodified copy of the original export file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import content into the new WordPress website<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then log in to the admin area of the new WordPress installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tools \u2192 Import data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, WordPress provides various import options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a WordPress export, you use the corresponding WordPress importer. If this is not yet installed, WordPress can offer to install the importer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterwards, you can select the previously exported XML file and start the import.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assign authors during import<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the import, WordPress may ask for the assignment of existing authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the import process, you can, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>assign an existing user<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create a new user<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assign imported content to another user<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the assignment carefully, especially if multiple authors have worked on the previous website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Include media files on import<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the WordPress import, the option can be offered to download and import attachments or media files belonging to the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diese Option ist f\u00fcr einen vollst\u00e4ndigen Inhaltsumzug normalerweise wichtig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der Import von Medien funktioniert allerdings nur, wenn die entsprechenden Dateien auf der bisherigen Website noch erreichbar sind und der Abruf technisch m\u00f6glich ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Practical Tip:<\/strong> L\u00f6sche oder deaktivere die alte WordPress.com-Website nicht unmittelbar nach dem Export. ben\u00f6tigt werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Es ist nicht sinnvoll, die neue Website mit zahlreichen Plugins auszustatten, nur um die alte Umgebung m\u00f6glichst exakt nachzubauen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WordPress.com-spezifische Funktionen pr\u00fcfen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bestimmte Funktionen k\u00f6nnen auf WordPress.com direkt durch die Plattform bereitgestellt worden sein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bei einer selbst gehosteten Installation musst du pr\u00fcfen, ob daf\u00fcr:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul wird<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>die Funktion \u00fcberhaupt noch ben\u00f6tigt wird<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nutze den Umzug deshalb auch als Gelegenheit, die bisherige Website technisch zu bereinigen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kontaktformulare nach dem Umzug testen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wenn die bisherige Website Kontakt- oder andere Formulare verwendet, solltest du diese auf der neuen Website nicht als selbstverst\u00e4ndlich funktionsf\u00e4hig betrachten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ob das Formular vorhanden ist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ob alle Felder funktionieren<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an welche E-Mail-Adresse Nachrichten gesendet werden<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>welche technische Absenderadresse verwendet wird<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ob Testnachrichten tats\u00e4chlich ankommen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ob Spam-Schutz und Datenschutzanforderungen weiterhin passen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigation und Men\u00fcs kontrollieren<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nach einem Import solltest du die Navigation der neuen Website \u00fcberpr\u00fcfen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Main navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Footer Navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submenus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Links auf interne Seiten<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Links auf externe Websites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abh\u00e4ngig vom Theme und der verwendeten WordPress-Struktur kann es notwendig sein, Men\u00fcs beziehungsweise Navigationsbl\u00f6cke neu zuzuordnen oder anzupassen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Permalink-Struktur der neuen Website pr\u00fcfen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ein wichtiger Punkt bei einer bestehenden Website sind die URLs der einzelnen Inhalte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kontrolliere die Permalink-Einstellungen der neuen WordPress-Installation und vergleiche wichtige alte und neue URLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eine unn\u00f6tige \u00c4nderung bestehender URLs kann dazu f\u00fchren, dass:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>alte Links nicht mehr
