Select and extract the ZIP file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Highlight the ZIP file in the file manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then select the function <strong>Extract<\/strong> or rather <strong>Unpack<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">cPanel asks for the destination directory to which the files should be extracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Check destination path carefully<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the suggested destination path before starting the extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>public_html<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">want to unpack, make sure that another directory is not accidentally selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The destination path is one of the most important points when extracting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Do not unpack an unknown archive directly via a production website. Check the content and directory structure first.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Consider existing files<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special care is required if there are already files in the target directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the ZIP archive contains files with identical names, existing files can be replaced or overwritten during extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This affects, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>index.php<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>.htaccess<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>wp-config.php<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or other productive website files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backup before extracting over an existing website<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an archive is to be extracted into a website directory that is already in use, you should create an appropriate backup of the existing data beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows you to restore the previous state in case the archive contains unexpected files or overwrites existing data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> \u201eJust unpacking it over the top is not a secure update or recovery strategy for a production website.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Start extraction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the destination directory and the contents of the archive have been checked, you can start the extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait until cPanel has completed the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With large archives or a large number of contained files, processing may take some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Check unpacked files<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then open the destination directory and check the resulting structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>whether the expected files are present<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether an unexpected additional subfolder has been created<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether files are in the correct document root<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether file names and directories are plausible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Test website after extracting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the archive contains files of an active website, access the website directly afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not only check the home page, but also some subpages or the function that was changed by the new files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an error occurs immediately after extraction, you should not modify any further files on suspicion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, check which files were added or replaced by the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17. Remove ZIP file after successful extraction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the archive is no longer needed after extraction, you can delete it from the server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reduces memory consumption and prevents a potentially sensitive archive file from unnecessarily remaining in your web space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Practical Tip:<\/strong> First unpack, check the result and test the website - then remove the ZIP archive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A ZIP archive is not automatically a complete website backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you compress a website's directory into a ZIP file, you are initially backing up only the selected files and folders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many websites also use a database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In WordPress, for example, posts, pages, settings, and much more information are stored in the database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ZIP archive from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>public_html<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">does not contain this database automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> A ZIP file containing website files is not automatically a complete backup for a database-driven website.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZIP archive is still suitable as a quick file backup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before making a targeted change to multiple files, a ZIP archive of the affected directory can be useful as an additional short-term backup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you want to modify a specific website folder, you can compress it beforehand and download the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, you should not rely exclusively on it for a complete recovery strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cannot create archive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If cPanel cannot create a ZIP archive, first check the available disk space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional storage is required for the new archive, while the original files remain available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other possible causes may include very large amounts of data or technical limitations of the ongoing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Record a displayed error message as completely as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZIP file cannot be uploaded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the upload fails, check:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the available storage space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the size of the ZIP file<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the upload was completed successfully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the target directory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a possibly displayed error message<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For very large file transfers, another transfer method may be more suitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZIP file cannot be extracted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If cPanel cannot extract an archive, the file may be incomplete or corrupted, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check on your computer, if possible, whether the archive can be opened there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If even the local opening fails, you should recreate the archive or obtain it again from a reliable source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not enough memory while unpacking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional storage space is also required during extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>website.zip<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">as well as the files extracted from them are on the server at the same time, both sets of data require storage space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nearly full hosting account can therefore reach its storage limit during extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZIP file is much smaller than the unpacked data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Text-based files can often be compressed significantly.
