This is especially practical if you want to upload or download many files, manually transfer a website, or regularly work with the files on the server.

In this guide, we will show you step by step how to set up an FTP account previously created in cPanel in FileZilla, use an encrypted connection, and then securely upload and download files.

Important: An FTP account created in cPanel is not automatically SFTP access. In FileZilla, always select the protocol that is actually intended for your access credentials.

What do you need for the connection?

Before you set up FileZilla, you need the login credentials of your FTP account.

This usually includes:

Server or hostname

full FTP username

FTP password

the intended transmission protocol

if applicable, the corresponding port

If you haven't created a separate FTP account yet, you can find the procedure under Create an FTP account in cPanel.

Differentiate between FTP, FTPS, and SFTP

The names look similar, but technically they are different processes.

FTP is the classical File Transfer Protocol. In an unencrypted FTP connection, the transferred data is not protected by TLS.

FTPS uses FTP in conjunction with TLS, thus enabling encrypted transmission.

SFTP stands for SSH File Transfer Protocol and uses SSH. It is technically not FTP and requires a corresponding SSH/SFTP account.

Recommendation: For a normal cPanel FTP account, use an encrypted FTP connection with TLS if possible, provided it is intended for your access. You should avoid unencrypted FTP.

1. Install FileZilla Client

To access your web hosting, you need the FileZilla Client.

Make sure you install the client and not the FileZilla Server.

After installation, you open FileZilla on your computer.

2. Open Server Manager

For a permanently saved connection, you should Server manager from using FileZilla.

Open:

File → Server Manager

and then select New server.

Provide a unique name, for example:

CURIAWEB – meine-domain.ch

This is especially helpful if you manage multiple hosting accounts or websites with FileZilla later.

3. Select protocol

In the Server Manager, select the protocol designated for your access.

For a normal cPanel FTP account, use FTP or FTP with TLS, provided this is offered for your access.

Do not just choose SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol, just because SFTP is encrypted.

Important: SFTP only works with a dedicated SSH/SFTP access. The username and password of a regular additional cPanel FTP account do not make it an SFTP access.

4. Enter host

Enter in the field Server or rather Host enter the server name designated for your hosting account.

Use the connection data of your CURIAWEB hosting account.

Do not simply copy a hostname from an external guide.

5. Set encryption

When using FTP, select the TLS option intended for your access.

Depending on the version, FileZilla offers settings for explicit FTP over TLS, for example.

This starts the connection as an FTP connection and then secures it via TLS.

Safety: Avoid setting strictly unencrypted FTP if an encrypted connection is available.

6. Enter port

If you were given a specific port for your connection, enter it in FileZilla.

If no different port is specified, FileZilla can use the standard port depending on the selected protocol.

Typically, FTP or explicit FTPS uses:

21

SFTP typically uses:

22

However, these default values do not mean that every server necessarily has to be accessible via these ports.

7. Select login type

Select a suitable login type for username and password.

If you save the login credentials permanently in FileZilla, keep the security options of your system and FileZilla in mind.

You should not permanently save FTP passwords on shared or foreign computers.

8. Enter full FTP username

Enter the full username of the FTP account.

An additional cPanel FTP account can, for example, have a username in this format:

projekt@example.com

If cPanel displays this full name, it is sufficient:

project

might not be sufficient for registration.

Common mistake: If FileZilla rejects the login, first check whether you are really using the full FTP username.

9. Enter FTP password

Enter the password you set when creating the FTP account.

The FTP password does not have to match your cPanel password and should be intentionally chosen to be unique for a separate FTP account.

If you no longer know your password, you should change it in cPanel instead of guessing different passwords.

10. Establish connection

Check the entered data and then click on Connect.

FileZilla is now attempting to connect to the server.

In the upper area of the program window, you can follow the status messages of the connection establishment.

11. Check TLS certificate

During an encrypted FTP connection, FileZilla can display information about the server's TLS certificate when connecting for the first time.

Do not automatically accept a certificate just to allow the connection to proceed.

Check in particular whether you have actually connected to the intended server and whether FileZilla reports a certificate error.

Attention: An unexpected certificate warning should not simply be ignored. Check the server name and connection details before transmitting credentials to a potentially incorrect endpoint.

12. Detect successful connection

Once the login is successful, FileZilla displays the server's directories and files that your FTP account is allowed to access.

When you have restricted an additional FTP account to a specific folder, your access starts within this area.

You may then not see the complete directory structure of the entire hosting account.

This is intentional and not a bug.

Understanding the FileZilla interface

After a successful connection, the interface essentially consists of two important areas.

On the left side are the local files on your computer.

On the right side are located the files of the connected server.

Left: your computer
Right: your web hosting

Note: When uploading, you usually transfer from left to right. When downloading, from right to left.

13. Select local directory

On the left side, navigate to the folder on your computer where your website files are located or where downloaded files should be saved.

Check the local path before transferring files.

14. Select server directory

Navigate to the desired destination directory on the server on the right side.

If your FTP account has been restricted directly to the directory of a specific website, you might already be in the correct area.

For example, with a more comprehensive access, the document root of the main website can be found at:

public_html

lie.

A different document root can be used for additional domains.

Attention: Do not just upload files to
public_html
, just because this folder exists. First, check which document root actually belongs to the relevant domain.

15. Upload file to web hosting

Select the desired local file on the left side.

You can, for example, drag and drop them into the desired directory on the right side.

Alternatively, you can use the corresponding upload function via the context menu.

FileZilla then adds the file to the transfer queue.

16. Check upload

Wait until the transfer is complete.

Check afterwards on the right side:

Filename

Destination directory

File size

Transfer status

If the file belongs to a website, test the affected function or page afterwards.

Upload multiple files

In FileZilla, you can select multiple files or entire directories and transfer them together.

FileZilla processes transfers through its queue.

Therefore, with a large website, the transfer can take some time.

Do not close FileZilla before the required transfers are complete.

17. Download files from the server

For downloading, the process works in reverse.

Select the desired server file on the right side and transfer it to the desired local folder on the left side.

Upon completion, you should check whether the file is present locally and has a plausible size.

Download a file before making a change

If you want to replace or edit an important file on a production website, you can download the existing server version beforehand.

As a result, you have a copy that you can fall back on in case of an error.

Practical Tip: Before overwriting an important file: download the existing server version, make the change, upload it, and test the website immediately.

Overwrite existing file

If a file with the same name already exists on the server, FileZilla can display a dialog on how to handle the existing file.

Depending on the situation, you can decide, for example, whether the file should be overwritten, skipped, or replaced under certain conditions.

Check this in particular:

local file name

Server file names

File size

Modification time

whether you are in the correct directory

Attention: Do not use „always overwrite“ thoughtlessly for a large transfer on a production website. An incorrect local version could thereby replace many correct server files.

19. Check transfer queue

At the bottom of FileZilla, you can find information about active and completed transfers.

Failed transfers are particularly important.

When you upload a complete website with thousands of files, it is not enough to trust that the process „looks about finished.“.

Check if files have failed.

Check failed transfers

If FileZilla could not transfer files, you should check the affected entries and their corresponding status messages.

Transfer failed files again if necessary after the cause has been resolved.

A website can malfunction or be incomplete due to just a few missing files.

20. Check successful transfers

Even after a seemingly successful transfer, you should test the website.

Check, for example:

Home

several subpages

Images and stylesheets

affected functions

Administration area, if relevant

During a complete website migration, databases and application configurations must also be considered.

FileZilla only transfers files – not the database automatically

In database-driven websites like WordPress, much of the content and settings are not located exclusively in the file system.

For example, if you complete the folder:

public_html

We explain safe processing at .htaccess explained and safely edited.

Versteckte Dateien fehlen in FileZilla
