Depending on the server configuration, additional applications are also available through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this guide, we will show you how to open Softaculous, select an application, correctly fill in the most important installation fields, and avoid typical errors regarding domain, HTTPS, and installation directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> An automatic installation is simple\u2014choosing the wrong directory or the wrong domain can still result in your application appearing at an unexpected address afterward. Therefore, carefully check the installation details before starting the installation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Softaculous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous is an automatic installer for web applications and is integrated into the CURIAWEB cPanel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply put, Softaculous handles several technical steps for you during an installation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Select application\n\u2192 Set installation destination\n\u2192 Deploy files\n\u2192 Configure database\n\u2192 Set basic settings\n\u2192 Install application<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which specific functions and applications are available depends on the Softaculous configuration provided on the hosting system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do with Softaculous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous is not only intended for initial installations. Take a moment, especially for the domain and installation directory. A misconfigured DNS or a certificate issue is not automatically fixed by the actual application installation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Selecting the right domain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the domain field, select the domain where the application should be installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your hosting account contains multiple domains, corresponding multiple entries may appear there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carefully check the selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you accidentally select a different domain instead, the application will be installed in the corresponding area of that domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check the installation directory with particular care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation directory field is one of the most important settings of the entire Softaculous installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your website is directly at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/example.com\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">you must not accidentally use an additional subdirectory for it to be accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Install website directly on the domain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should the application be directly under:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/example.com\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">appear, the field for the installation directory normally remains <strong>read<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous then installs the application in the document root of the selected domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> If Softaculous, for example, in the directory field already <code>WP<\/code> entered and you want to install WordPress directly on the domain, remove this entry before the installation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when \u201ewp\u201c is entered as the directory?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose you choose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and enter as the installation directory:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>WP<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the application is not installed directly on the main address, but typically under:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/example.com\/wp\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is correct if you want precisely this structure. For a normal website that should be accessible directly via the main domain, however, such an additional directory is usually not desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is a subdirectory useful?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A subdirectory can be used intentionally when an application is actually supposed to run under a specific path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/example.com\/blog\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the installation directory could be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>blog<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, that should be a conscious decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation directory is not the same as the domain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The domain determines the hostname, and the installation directory determines an additional path within the corresponding web area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simplified:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Domain:\nexample.com\n\nDirectory empty:\nhttps:\/\/example.com\/\n\nDirectory = blog:\nhttps:\/\/example.com\/blog\/<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Check if a website already exists in the target directory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you install a new application, you should check whether files for a website already exist in the intended document root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially important if the domain has already been used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the <a href=\"\/en\/help\/web-hosting-cpanel\/use-cpanel-file-manager\/\">cPanel File Manager<\/a> can you check the directory in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Do not uncontrollably install a new application into a directory that already contains a productive website. Existing files and a new installation can interfere with each other.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Existing index file can cause confusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a file such as the following can already exist in a document root:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>index.html<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A newly installed PHP application can simultaneously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>index.php<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the web server configuration, an existing default file may cause the expected website not to appear after installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, check existing files instead of deleting them on suspicion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check application version<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous can offer a version selection for some applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a new production installation, you should generally use a current, supported version unless there is a specific technical reason for a different version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not deliberately install an old application version just because an older tutorial uses it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Set website name and description<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the application, you can already define basic website settings during installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In WordPress, this can include the website name and description, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These details can be changed later within WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Set administrator username<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many applications, Softaculous asks you to set an administrator username.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use an individual username for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safety Notice:<\/strong> Avoid unnecessarily easily guessable administrator credentials. While an individual username does not replace a strong password, it does reduce avoidable default configurations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Use strong administrator password<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use a strong and unique password for the administrator account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The password should not be identical to your cPanel, email, or any other login password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous can offer a password generator or a password strength evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> The administrator account of a web application has extensive privileges. Do not use a short, reused, or easily guessed password for it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Check administrator email address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide an email address that you actually have access to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The application can use this address, for example, for administrative notifications or account recovery features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the spelling before installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Select language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Softaculous offers a language selection, you can set the desired language of the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In WordPress, the language can also be changed later in the administration area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Do not blindly change advanced options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the application, Softaculous displays further options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may include, for example, the database name, table prefix, automatic updates, backup settings, or additional application settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don't know an option and have no concrete reason to make a change, you shouldn't change values at random.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Database is set up automatically by Softaculous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a typical installation, Softaculous can automatically create and configure the required database and its access credentials for the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, you do not need to manually create a MySQL database first for a standard Softaculous installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you prefer to set up databases yourself, you can find the procedure under <a href=\"\/en\/help\/web-hosting-cpanel\/create-mysql-database\/\">Create MySQL database in cPanel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do not change the database name without good reason<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Softaculous automatically suggests a suitable database name, there is often no reason to change it manually for a standard installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when running multiple applications, clear naming can be helpful for later administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WordPress table prefix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In WordPress, Softaculous can set a table prefix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a prefix looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>wp_<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or can have a different value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prefix is prepended to the WordPress database tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not subsequently change it directly in the database without knowing what further adjustments are required for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deliberately configure automatic updates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous can offer automatic update options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you enable such features should depend on how you administer the website in question and what update strategy you use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A productive website should also have a working backup strategy in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automatic updates are no substitute for control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if updates are performed automatically, you should check a production website regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a software update can conflict with a plugin, theme, or custom code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backup Settings in Softaculous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the configuration, Softaculous can offer its own backup functions for supported applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such application backups are to be distinguished from other backup systems of your hosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softaculous backups, hosting backups, and JetBackup, for example, are not automatically the same backup system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> Do not rely on a backup just because a backup function is visible somewhere in cPanel.
