This is useful, for example, if you no longer want to accept messages from a clearly identifiable sender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the block list should not be used as a replacement for automatic spam detection. Typical spam campaigns frequently use changing or forged sender addresses. Manually blocking every single spam address is therefore usually not a sensible long-term strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CURIAWEB recommendation:<\/strong> Use the sender block list for concrete and traceable blocks. If ordinary spam gets through, first investigate the message in question and use filter training if necessary. You should leave the general SpamExperts filter settings at their proven default values.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the sender block list?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sender Block List contains senders whose incoming messages are specifically blocked by SpamExperts or treated according to the selected rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It complements the automatic spam detection with manually defined blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simplified:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Normal message\n       \u2193\nSpamExperts\n       \u2193\nAutomatic filter evaluation\n\nBlocked sender\n       \u2193\nSpamExperts\n       \u2193\nSender block list rule applies<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A block list rule can be set up for a single sender address or for an entire sender domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is a sender block list useful?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sender Block List is particularly useful when you want to specifically block a particular sender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical use case would be a clearly identified sender from whom you fundamentally no longer wish to accept emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before creating an entry, however, you should check whether the message in question actually comes from this sender and whether a permanent block is the appropriate measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the block list not the right solution?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to ordinary spam, continuously blocking individual sender addresses is often not very effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spammers can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>constantly use new sender addresses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use different domains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forge sender information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using compromised legitimate accounts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>spam123@example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">block, the next message can already originate from a completely different address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of a spam message that has clearly been misclassified, targeted filter training is therefore often more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We explain the procedure under <a href=\"\/en\/help\/email-spamexperts\/spamexperts-filter-trainieren\/\">Train SpamExperts Filter: Report spam and ham correctly<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Open SpamExperts Control Panel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open your SpamExperts service via the CURIAWEB customer center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After logging in, check that you are managing the correct domain or the correct user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We declare the registration under <a href=\"\/en\/help\/email-spamexperts\/spamexperts-dashboard-login\/\">Login to the SpamExperts Dashboard via the CURIAWEB Customer Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Open sender block list<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open in the SpamExperts Control Panel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Incoming \u2192 Protection Settings \u2192 Sender Block list<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which views and options are available depends on your access level and permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the domain level, you manage the block list for the open domain. At higher administrative levels, additional sections or inherited rules may be visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Block new sender<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose <strong>Block sender<\/strong>, to create a new entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, check the domain in question and \u2013 if this option is available for your account \u2013 the recipient or scope of the rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you determine which sender information the block should be applied to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Envelope Sender or From address?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpamExperts can distinguish between different sender information in a sender block list rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Option<\/th><th>Meaning<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Envelope Sender<\/td><td>Technical sender address from the SMTP transmission<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>From: Address<\/td><td>sender address from the message header, typically displayed in the email client<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Both<\/td><td>Rule is applied to both sender information entries<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Envelope Sender and the visible From address do not have to be identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This happens regularly, for example, with newsletter systems, online shops, CRM platforms, and other automated mailing services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> Do not select sender information on suspicion. If you want to block a specific problematic sender, examine the relevant message and its sender information first.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if the envelope sender is hit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will the block list rule be applied to the <strong>Envelope Sender<\/strong> applied and the message matches this rule, SpamExperts can reject the message from the sender during the SMTP transmission itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A message rejected in this manner is not, by default, accepted first and then placed into the spam quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is important for troubleshooting: A message does not have to appear in quarantine just because it was not delivered due to a sender block list rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if the From address is hit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a rule on the <strong>From address<\/strong> the corresponding message is treated as spam by SpamExperts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens subsequently to messages treated as spam depends on the established spam handling or quarantine configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CURIAWEB generally recommends not changing the existing standard configuration without a specific reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Block a single email address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If only a specific sender is to be blocked, enter the full sender address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>absender@example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, a rule that is as specific as possible is better than blocking an entire domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Block entire sender domain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpamExperts also makes it possible to block an entire sender domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if all senders of a specific domain are to be blocked, the domain is entered without <code>@<\/code> and entered without wildcard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spellings such as the following are not required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>@example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>*@example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Blocking an entire domain affects significantly more potential senders than blocking a single address. Therefore, only use a domain block if you actually want to block all corresponding senders.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Save rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check again before saving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>correct domain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>correct recipient or scope of application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>correct sender address or sender domain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Envelope sender, From address, or both<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then save the block list entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Check for blockages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the rule was created due to a specific problem, you can process future messages via the <strong>Log Search<\/strong> understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Log search is much more meaningful than simply checking whether a message has arrived in the mailbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find the complete instructions at <a href=\"\/en\/help\/email-spamexperts\/log-search-e-mail-verlauf\/\">SpamExperts Log Search: Trace E-Mail History<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the message not in quarantine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common misconception is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>Message blocked\n       =\nMessage must be in quarantine<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not always true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If, for example, a block list rule is applied to the SMTP envelope sender, SpamExperts can reject the message during the SMTP connection itself. By default, such a message is not accepted first and stored in quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, if you want to know how a specific message was handled, use Log Search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do not add your own domain to the sender block list<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A particularly important point concerns protection against forged senders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems logical at first to put your own domain on the block list so that no one from the outside can send an email with your own sender domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That is not the recommended approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention:<\/strong> SpamExperts explicitly recommends not placing your own domain on the Incoming Sender Block List to prevent spoofing. SPF and DMARC, or a properly configured email authentication, should be used for this purpose.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is a block list not sufficient against spoofing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In email spoofing, sender information is forged so that a message appears to originate from another person or domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, an attacker could try to send a message with a spoofed sender address such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>geschaeftsleitung@example.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The actual problem here is not that the address should be blocked in general.
