Technically, however, the terms describe different things.

A Domain is the unique address under which an internet offering can be reached. A Website consists of the actual content and files served via a web server. A URL on the other hand designates the specific address of a particular resource – for example, an individual page, an image, or a file.

Knowing the differences is especially helpful when registering a domain, migrating a website, changing DNS settings, or investigating a technical issue with your online presence.

Briefly explained: The domain is the address, the website is the online presence accessible via it, and a URL describes the exact location of a specific resource.

What is a domain?

A domain is a human-readable name within the Domain Name System (DNS). It makes it possible to access internet services via names like
curiaweb.ch
to address, instead of having to memorize the underlying technical addresses.

A typical domain looks like this, for example:

meine-firma.ch

In this example, it consists of two essential components:

my company
is the name within the selected domain extension.

.ch
is the top-level domain (TLD).

Further examples of top-level domains are
.com
,
.de
,
.org
or
.swiss
.

We explain in more detail what a TLD is and what function it has within the Domain Name System at What is a top-level domain (TLD)?.

A domain is not yet a website

Registering a domain does not automatically create a website.

For example, you can
meine-firma.ch
register without any content already existing under this address. The domain then exists, but it still needs to be determined which internet services should be accessible through it.

For visitors to be able to access a website, the domain must point via DNS to the appropriate hosting infrastructure. That is where the website's content is located or created.

Simply put, the DNS takes on the task of connecting domain names with the technical destinations responsible for the respective service.

We explain how this process works at DNS simply explained: How the Domain Name System works.

What is a website?

A website is the actual internet presence. It can consist of a single page or many interconnected pages and resources.

This may include, for example:

Texts and headings

Images and graphics

Stylesheets for the design

JavaScript files

Downloads and Documents

Forms

Database contents

Blog posts

Shop and product pages

With a content management system like WordPress, a lot of content is additionally stored in a database and processed dynamically when a page is called.

The website requires a hosting environment or a web server that provides the requested content.

Domain and hosting are two different things

Domain and hosting are often ordered together, but they are technically separate components.

The domain provides the name or address. Among other things, web hosting provides storage space and server services for the website.

Therefore, a domain does not necessarily have to be registered with the same provider where the website is hosted.

For example, you can manage a domain with an external registrar and connect it to your CURIAWEB hosting via name servers or DNS records.

We explain how this works at Keep domain with another registrar and connect to CURIAWEB Hosting.

Important: When you switch web hosting, it does not automatically mean that the domain also has to be transferred to another registrar. Hosting changes and domain transfers are technically different processes.

What is a URL?

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. A URL describes the address of a specific resource on the internet.

For example, a complete URL can look like this:

https://www.meine-firma.ch/produkte/webhosting

While
meine-firma.ch
the domain describes the complete URL in more detail, specifying which resource should be accessed and how it is addressed.

How is a URL structured?

Let us look at this example:

https://www.meine-firma.ch/produkte/webhosting

The most important components are:

https://

This is the protocol or URL scheme used. HTTPS stands for HTTP over an encrypted TLS connection.

www

This is a hostname or, in this case, a name subordinate to the domain. Technically,
www.meine-firma.ch
not identical to
meine-firma.ch
, even though both often lead to the same website.

meine-firma.ch

This is the domain.

/products/webhosting/

This is the path to the requested resource within the website.

A URL can contain further components

In addition to the scheme, hostname, and path, a URL can contain further information.

An example is:

https://shop.meine-firma.ch/produkte/?kategorie=hosting#vergleich

It also contains a subdomain, a query string, and a fragment.

shop
is a child name in this example within
meine-firma.ch
.

?category=hosting
is a query string. Parameters can be passed to a web application via it.

# Comparison
is a fragment. For example, it can refer to a specific section within a page.

Briefly explained: A domain can be part of many different URLs. The domain
meine-firma.ch
remains the same, while protocol, hostname, path, parameters, or fragment may differ.

What is a subdomain?

With a domain, different hostnames or subdomains can be used.

Examples are:

shop.meine-firma.ch

blog.meine-firma.ch

support.meine-firma.ch

This can be used to structure different services or areas under the same registered domain.

A subdomain is not a completely newly registered domain. It is set up within the DNS configuration of the existing domain.

What is the difference between a subdomain and a subdirectory?

A subdomain like:

shop.meine-firma.ch

is technically structured differently than a subdirectory like:

meine-firma.ch/shop/

In the first variant,
shop
used as its own hostname within the DNS or the server configuration. In the second variant, the hostname remains the same and
/shop/
is merely a path within the website.

Which option makes sense depends on the technical and organizational structure of the project.

What is DNS and what role does it play in this?

The Domain Name System connects domain names with technical information required for various internet services.

For example, when accessing a website, it must be determined which IP address the responsible web server can be reached under.

For email services, on the other hand, other DNS records can be specified which mail servers accept messages for the domain.

DNS therefore does not consist only of a simple „domain → website“ mapping. Different record types fulfill different tasks.

We explain the most important DNS records such as A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and CAA at DNS Records Explained: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and CAA.

A domain can be used for more than one website

Domains are not needed exclusively for websites.

Different internet services can be operated under the same domain. For example:

www.meine-firma.ch
point to a website

shop.meine-firma.ch
provide an online store

mail.meine-firma.ch
be used for email services

Which systems are actually addressed is determined by DNS and the configuration of the respective servers.

Email addresses also use a domain

For an email address like:

info@meine-firma.ch

is
meine-firma.ch
also the domain.

However, this does not mean that email and website necessarily have to be hosted on the same server.

For example, MX records in the DNS can be used to determine which mail servers are responsible for incoming emails, while the website points to a different infrastructure via an A or AAAA record.

Therefore, a website can be easily accessible while there is simultaneously a problem with email traffic – or vice versa.

What does it mean to transfer a domain?

The expression „transfer domain“ is not unambiguous in everyday use.

This can refer to various technical processes.

At a Domain transfer the administration of the domain is transferred from one registrar to another.

At a Nameserver change whereas the registrar might remain unchanged while other nameservers will be responsible for the DNS zone in the future.

In case of a change to individual DNS records can in turn only point certain services to a new infrastructure without changing the registrar or nameserver.

And with a Website migration the actual website data and, if applicable, databases are transferred to another hosting provider.

Important: Domain transfer, nameserver change, DNS modification, and website migration are not the same thing. Depending on what is to be changed, a different technical process is required.

What happens if only the domain is registered?

A registered domain can exist without a website or email service having been set up under it yet.

Whether and what is displayed when accessing such a domain depends on its DNS and hosting configuration. For example, a placeholder page, a redirection, an error page, or no accessible website at all are possible.

Registration therefore initially secures the domain name. The desired services must then be set up accordingly and connected to the domain.

What happens with a new domain?

Following a new registration, the technical information required for use must be set up and available in the DNS.

Additionally, DNS information can be cached at various locations. Therefore, changes are not necessarily visible everywhere on the internet at the exact same time.

This behavior is often simply referred to as DNS propagation.

We explain why DNS changes are not always immediately visible everywhere at DNS Propagation Explained: Why Changes Can Take Time.

Domain, URL and website using an example

Let's take as an example:

https://www.meine-firma.ch/kontakt

Then the distinction can be simplified as follows:

Domain
meine-firma.ch

Hostname:
www.meine-firma.ch

URL:
https://www.meine-firma.ch/kontakt/

Website: the entire website, which includes the contact page among other things

Another URL of the same website could be, for example:

https://www.meine-firma.ch/ueber-uns

The domain remains the same, while the URL points to a different resource or page.

Why is the distinction important in technical problems?

If a website is unreachable, it does not automatically mean that the domain itself has a problem.

Possible causes may include, for example, DNS resolution, the web server, hosting, an SSL certificate, or the website application.

Similarly, the domain can point correctly to the website while emails do not work due to a different DNS or mail server configuration.

When troubleshooting, it is therefore helpful to describe as precisely as possible which service is affected.

Instead of simply saying „My domain is not working,“ the information „The website is unreachable, but email is still working,“ for example, is technically much more informative.

Summary

Domain, website, and URL refer to different components of an internet presence.

The Domain is the registered name like
meine-firma.ch
. DNS can be used to determine which systems and services are associated with this name.

The Website is the actual internet presence with its pages, content, files, and, if applicable, database information.

A URL describes the specific address of a resource, for example
https://www.meine-firma.ch/kontakt/
.

Hosting, domain registration, DNS, and website are closely related, but technically they are different components. This separation is particularly important for domain transfers, hosting changes, DNS updates, and troubleshooting.

Website, Domain und URL werden im Alltag häufig gleichbedeutend verwendet.
