A domain can be registered with one provider, use different nameservers, point to a third-party web server, and receive emails via yet another service.

Therefore, technically speaking, there is not necessarily a single provider where „everything resides.“.

Briefly explained: For a domain, you should distinguish between at least four areas: Register, DNS or nameserver, Web hosting and Email. These services can be with the same provider – but they do not have to be.

Which providers can be behind a domain?

Let's take the domain as an example:

meinefirma.ch

A possible configuration could look like this:

Domain Registration: Provider A
Nameservers / DNS: Provider B
Website / Hosting: Provider C
E-Mail: Provider D

Of course, all four services can likewise be operated by a single provider.

To find out who is responsible for which area, different information must therefore be checked.

What is the registrar of a domain?

The registrar or domain provider manages the registration of the domain with the responsible registry.

Depending on the domain extension, this provider is used to manage renewals, contact details, transfers, or nameserver settings, for example.

The registry, on the other hand, is the central authority responsible for the respective top-level domain.

We explain the difference in detail at Registry and Registrar: What is the difference?.

How do I find out the registrar of my domain?

The available registration information depends on the respective domain extension.

For many generic top-level domains like
.com
,
.NET
or
.org
Can registration data be queried via RDAP today?.

There, depending on the domain and the published data, information on the registrar and the registration status, for example, can be available.

For country-code top-level domains like
.ch
the procedures of the respective registry apply.

Important: The registrar is not automatically the web host. For example, if provider A appears as the registrar in the domain lookup, the website can still be operated entirely with provider B.

How do I find the registrar of a .ch domain?

For
.ch
SWITCH is the responsible registry for .domains.

The public domain query from SWITCH can provide information on a registered
.ch
Provide domain. Which details are displayed depends on the registration data available or publicly accessible for the domain.

The domain itself is managed for end customers via a registrar.

It is an important distinction that SWITCH does not have to be the web hosting provider for your domain, but rather the registry.

What do the nameservers of a domain reveal?

Nameservers indicate which DNS infrastructure is authoritatively responsible for the domain.

For a domain managed via CURIAWEB DNS, the following nameservers can be used, for example:

ns1.curiaweb.ch
ns2.curiaweb.ch

If these nameservers are configured, it means that the authoritative DNS zone is provided via these nameservers.

However, this does not necessarily mean that all services of the domain are operated on the same infrastructure.

You can find more information at Finding and correctly using CURIAWEB nameservers.

How can I check the nameservers of a domain?

With the CURIAWEB DNS-Check can you check publicly visible DNS information of a domain.

Particularly interesting in this regard are the NS records. They specify which authoritative name servers are responsible for the domain.

We explain further options under Check DNS records: View current DNS configuration of a domain.

Are nameservers and web hosting the same thing?

No.

This is one of the most common domain confusions.

The nameservers answer DNS queries and provide, for example, the information regarding which IP address a website can be reached under.

However, the actual web server can be located on a different infrastructure.

A simplified example:

Nameserver:
ns1.beispiel-dns.ch
ns2.beispiel-dns.ch

A-Record:
meinefirma.ch → 192.0.2.10

In this example, the name servers manage the DNS zone. The IP address
192.0.2.10
contrarily points to the infrastructure through which the website can be accessed.

Note: The DNS provider tells you, Where a domain points. The web host provides the infrastructure on which the website is actually run.

How do I find out where my website is hosted?

A first technical indicator is the domain's A or AAAA record.

An A record points to an IPv4 address, and an AAAA record points to an IPv6 address.

Based on the IP address, it can then be examined which network or organization the address range in question is assigned to.

This can provide a clue about the infrastructure or hosting provider used.

Why doesn't the IP address always show the actual web host?

An IP lookup is helpful, but not always definitive.

Websites can be delivered, for example, via a content delivery network, a reverse proxy, a security platform, or another upstream infrastructure.

Then the public DNS record may point to this upstream platform rather than directly to the actual origin web server.

Reseller and agency models can also result in the technically identifiable infrastructure operator not being identical to the company from which the customer ordered their hosting.

Important: Therefore, it cannot always be conclusively deduced from a publicly visible IP address which company holds the hosting contract.

What needs to be considered with CNAME records?

Not every website has to point directly to an IP address via an A or AAAA record.

For example, a hostname can point to another hostname via a CNAME.

In this case, the DNS resolution must be further investigated to see which infrastructure the target ultimately points to.

We explain the differences between A, AAAA, and CNAME under DNS Records Explained: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and CAA.

How do I find out where my emails are processed?

For receiving emails, the MX records of a domain are particularly relevant.

For example, you can point to the web host's mail server, a specialized email provider, or an upstream email filter.

For a domain with an upstream SpamExperts incoming filter, the publicly visible MX records can, for example, point to the SpamExperts infrastructure.

However, that does not automatically mean that the actual user mailboxes are located there as well.

SpamExperts can first filter emails and then forward them to the actual destination mail server.

We explain how this configuration works at SpamExperts Incoming Filtering and MX Configuration.

Can I determine my email provider based on the MX record?

Often the MX record provides a good indication of the service that initially processes incoming messages.

However, that does not necessarily answer the question of where the final mailbox is located.

This applies in particular to upstream spam filters and email gateways.

Therefore, between MX target, Mail Gateway and Mailbox server be distinguished.

What do SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records indicate?

TXT and other DNS records can provide additional clues about the email services used.

An SPF record can, for example, authorize systems that are allowed to send emails on behalf of the domain. DKIM is used for the cryptographic signing of messages, and DMARC defines policies for handling or evaluating email authentication.

These entries help with the technical analysis of a domain, but they do not automatically determine where the website or domain is registered.

You can find more about this at SPF, DKIM, and DMARC in Hosting.

Why can the registrar, DNS, and hosting be with different providers?

Because these services are technically independent of each other.

For example, you can register a domain with a registrar, use external nameservers, and host the website with CURIAWEB.

We explain this exact model at Keep domain with another registrar and connect to CURIAWEB Hosting.

A domain transfer is not required for such a configuration.

How do I know if CURIAWEB manages the DNS zone?

A clear indication is the authoritative name servers.

If the following nameservers are active for the domain:

ns1.curiaweb.ch
ns2.curiaweb.ch

is the authoritative DNS zone provided via the CURIAWEB nameservers.

Which website and email services are subsequently accessed via the individual DNS records must be checked separately.

How can I tell if the website is hosted on CURIAWEB?

The CURIAWEB nameservers alone are not sufficient proof for this.

A domain managed via CURIAWEB DNS can be connected to an external web server.

Conversely, a domain managed by another DNS provider can point to CURIAWEB hosting via A, AAAA, or CNAME records.

Therefore, the actual target configuration of the website is decisive.

How do I know if my domain is registered with CURIAWEB?

Here too, you should not judge by the nameservers.

A domain can be managed by CURIAWEB and use external nameservers. Likewise, a domain registered with another domain provider can use the CURIAWEB nameservers.

For the question of domain registration, therefore, the registrar or the domain administration is decisive – not the NS, A, or MX record.

What does „domain owner“ mean?

The domain owner or registrant is also not to be equated with the registrar or web host.

Put simply, there are several different roles:

Domain Owner / Registrant
Registrar / Domain Provider
Registry
DNS Provider
Web Host
Email Provider

An individual or a company can be the domain owner, while the technical and administrative services are provided by different vendors.

Why are domain owner data not always publicly visible?

Public domain queries today do not necessarily show all contact details of the domain owner.

What information is made publicly available depends, among other things, on the domain extension, the registry or registrar procedures, and the applicable data protection and disclosure rules.

If a query does not display personal registrant data, that does not mean the domain has no registered owner.

Can I use a ping to find out where my website is hosted?

Under certain conditions, a ping can show which IP address a hostname is resolved to and whether the destination responds to ICMP requests.

However, a ping is not suitable as a reliable hosting detection method.

Servers or upstream systems can block ping requests. In addition, the same limitations apply as with an IP lookup: the visible address may belong to a CDN or reverse proxy, for example.

We explain how a ping test works and what the result actually means in the article Perform ping test: Check connection to a domain or server.

How do I proceed systematically with an unknown domain configuration?

If you do not know how a domain is currently set up, start with the domain registration and the nameservers.

Then check the DNS records for the website and email. NS, A, AAAA, CNAME, and MX records are particularly relevant.

This allows the configuration to be split up step by step:

1. Who is the registrar?
2. Which nameservers are authoritative?
3. Where do A / AAAA / CNAME point to?
4. Where do the MX records point to?
5. What other services are integrated via DNS?

Only after that should you try to assign the respective technical goals to a specific provider.

Practical Tip: If you are planning a provider change, document this information before the first modification. This makes it possible to trace later which services were previously operated via which infrastructure.

Why is this check important before changing hosts?

If you only look at the website, you can easily overlook other services that depend on the domain.

For example, an ill-considered nameserver change can cause a website to work on the new server, but email or an external service is no longer accessible because required DNS records are missing in the new zone.

Therefore, the existing DNS configuration should be documented before a change.

With the CURIAWEB DNS-Check can you first check the publicly visible DNS information for this.

Registrar, DNS, or hosting – who do I need to contact in case of a problem?

That depends on the cause.

Whether it is about domain registration, renewal, or transfer, the domain provider or registrar is the right contact person.

When it comes to DNS records, it must be clarified who manages the authoritative nameservers or the DNS zone.

In the event of a website error, on the other hand, the web host or the operator of the web server infrastructure is relevant.

In the case of email problems, the email provider or an upstream filtering service may in turn be involved.

Precisely for this reason, distinguishing between the individual components is important for targeted troubleshooting.

Summary

The question „Where is my domain hosted?“ cannot always be answered with a single provider.

The Register manages the domain registration. The authoritative nameserver determine where the DNS zone is managed. A, AAAA, or CNAME records point to the website's infrastructure, while MX records indicate which systems initially process incoming emails.

These services can all be with a single provider or distributed among multiple companies.

Therefore, an IP address or a nameserver alone is not reliable proof of which company a customer has signed their hosting contract with.

For a clean analysis, you should examine the registrar, nameservers, website destination, and email destination separately.

Wenn du herausfinden möchtest, „wo deine Domain gehostet wird“, musst du zunächst unterscheiden, wonach du tatsächlich suchst.
