Almost everywhere, plenty of storage space, fast servers, SSL certificates, and attractive prices are promised. At first glance, therefore, many hosting packages look astonishingly similar.

In practice, the important differences often lie elsewhere. How many resources are actually available to a website? How do backups and restorations work? Which PHP versions can be used? How is a hosting account isolated from other customers on the same server? And what happens if the website suddenly stops working on a Sunday evening?

As a Swiss hosting provider, we regularly experience during support requests and website migrations which points are underestimated when choosing a web host. Storage space and price are easy to compare. However, the quality of web hosting often only becomes apparent during operation.

This guide therefore shows which criteria are truly relevant in a web hosting comparison and what questions companies, freelancers, clubs, and private website operators should ask before switching or signing up for a new plan.

What is a web hosting provider?

A web hosting provider supplies the technical infrastructure on which a website is operated. This includes, in particular, storage space, computing power, memory, databases, PHP, and the server's connection to the internet.

With traditional shared hosting plans, multiple customers share a powerful server. However, this does not automatically mean that all websites access the same resources in an uncontrolled manner. Modern hosting platforms can isolate individual hosting accounts from one another and limit resources such as CPU, memory, and I/O performance.

Good hosting therefore consists of much more than just a few gigabytes of storage space.

Depending on the provider, hosting may also include the following services, for example:

Email mailboxes with your own domain

Databases

SSL certificates

Backup systems

Malware and security systems

DNS Management

Website and WordPress tools

Support for technical issues

In CURIAWEB, these functions are accessed via cPanel managed. This allows customers to manage domains, email addresses, databases, PHP settings, and other hosting functions through a central interface, among other things.

Web hosting Switzerland: Swiss provider or servers in Switzerland?

At a Webhosting Switzerland Comparison an important distinction should be made first: the legal domicile of the hosting provider and the physical location of its servers are not the same thing.

A Swiss company can operate servers in another European country. Conversely, a foreign company can use servers in a Swiss data center.

„Therefore, “Swiss hosting provider„ does not automatically mean “server location Switzerland.".

Anyone who cares about a specific server location should explicitly check this point with the respective provider and not assume it based solely on the company's headquarters or a .ch domain.

CURIAWEB GmbH is a Swiss company with personalized support from Chur. Our hosting servers are located in Germany. We deliberately communicate this distinction transparently so that customers know what service they are receiving.

Anyone generally interested in our hosting can find the technical features and available packages on our page for Swiss web hosting.

Why storage space alone reveals little about good hosting

Hosting plans are often compared by their available storage space. 10 GB looks better than 5 GB, and 100 GB better than 10 GB. For many websites, however, this number alone is not very meaningful.

A typical corporate website often requires only a small part of a large hosting package. At the same time, a website can respond slowly despite having plenty of free storage space if other technical resources are in short supply.

Storage capacity indicates how much data can be stored. It does not indicate how fast this data is processed.

Therefore, CPU performance, available memory, I/O performance, and simultaneously executable processes should also be taken into account during the comparison.

Dynamic systems like WordPress or WooCommerce in particular generate PHP processes and database queries. If resource limits are reached in the process, a website can react more slowly or output errors under high load.

Understanding CPU, RAM and resource limits

In shared hosting, multiple customers share the hardware of a server. Professional resource management prevents a single website from consuming all available resources and thereby negatively affecting other customers.

CURIAWEB uses this for that CloudLinux with LVE technology. In the process, defined resources can be assigned to individual hosting accounts.

CloudLinux can limit CPU performance, physical memory, I/O performance, the number of processes, and concurrently running web processes, among other things. This isolates a hosting account in terms of resources from other accounts on the same system.

This is particularly relevant in shared hosting. Without such resource management, a single heavily loaded or faulty website could impair the performance of other websites on the same server.

When comparing web hosting, it is therefore worth asking: Which resources are actually available to my hosting package and how are these resources managed?

NVMe storage: Speed is more important than sheer capacity

In addition to the amount of storage space, the storage technology used also plays a role. Modern hosting platforms frequently use SSD or NVMe storage.

NVMe was developed for fast access to flash memory and enables a high number of input and output operations. This particularly benefits database-based websites where many small files are read and written.

CURIAWEB relies on in its hosting packages NVMe SSD storage.

However, that does not mean that NVMe alone automatically guarantees a fast website. Themes, plugins, database, images, caching, and external services can also heavily influence the loading time.

Anyone experiencing problems with a slow WordPress installation can also find our detailed guide on the subject. WordPress slow despite good hosting?.

Current PHP versions are an important selection criterion

Many content management systems and web applications are based on PHP. This includes WordPress.

PHP is continuously being developed. Versions undergo a defined lifecycle and do not receive unlimited security updates. An hosting provider should therefore provide current PHP versions promptly and at the same time allow a controlled switch between supported versions.

At CURIAWEB, customers can access MultiPHP manage the PHP version for their website.

This is especially helpful for existing websites. A change of version should not be carried out blindly, as older themes, plugins, or custom applications may be incompatible with a new PHP version.

For WordPress, the WordPress project currently recommends PHP 8.3 or higher, as well as MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 and HTTPS support.

Therefore, a good web host should not only state „PHP supported,“ but also provide modern versions and allow for a controlled version change.

Backups: It’s not just about whether they are backed up

„Daily backup included“ sounds reassuring. However, this statement is not sufficient for a meaningful comparison.

More interesting are questions like:

How often are backups created?

How long are safeguards kept for?

What is being secured?

How does a recovery work?

Who can perform a restore?

A backup is only really useful if it can be used to restore a functioning website in an emergency.

CURIAWEB uses JetBackup 5 and maintains 30 backup states. Restorations can be performed via our support team.

Backups protect against the consequences of a faulty update, accidentally deleted files, or damaged website data, for example. However, they do not replace every form of additional data backup. In the case of business-critical applications, an additional external backup can be useful.

We explain more about this topic in our article about Website backups and disaster recovery.

Security in web hosting consists of several layers

An SSL certificate is today an essential component of a website, but SSL alone does not make a hosting service secure.

HTTPS encrypts the connection between the browser and the website. However, it does not, for example, prevent a vulnerable WordPress extension from being attacked or malware from landing in a hosting account.

Therefore, when comparing hosting services, several security aspects should be considered:

encrypted HTTPS connections

Separation or isolation of hosting accounts

Malware detection

Firewall and attack protection

regular backups

Current server and PHP environments

Among other things, CURIAWEB sets Imunify360 and ImunifyAV One. We explain in detail in our article how these two components differ. Imunify360 vs. ImunifyAV.

For SSL certificates, we have an additional overview under SSL certificates.

Web hosting and email should be considered together

For many companies, a hosting package consists not only of a website. Business email communication is at least as important.

Before switching, it should therefore be checked whether email mailboxes are included in the hosting, which protocols are supported, and how spam is handled.

At CURIAWEB, hosting packages can also be used exclusively for email. Email accounts can be managed via cPanel and used via webmail or common email programs and devices using IMAP or POP3 and SMTP.

Anyone who doesn't need a website and primarily wants to use email with their own domain will find more information on our page. Email Hosting Switzerland.

Optional for additional professional spam protection SpamExperts available.

WordPress has different requirements than a static website

WordPress generates pages dynamically from PHP, database content, themes, and plugins. As a result, in addition to storage space, PHP performance, database performance, and caching play an important role.

A hosting package can technically run WordPress, but it still may not be optimally tuned for larger or more complex WordPress websites.

CURIAWEB offers NVMe storage, Redis, flexible PHP versions, backups, and security features for WordPress, among other things. WordPress can be installed via Softaculous.

Anyone who wants to run a WordPress website specifically should therefore consider, in addition to the general hosting offer, which WordPress-specific features are available. An overview of our environment can be found here. WordPress Hosting.

What exactly WordPress hosting differs from normal web hosting, We explain this in a separate guide.

Support often only becomes important when something doesn't work

As long as a website runs smoothly, support feels like a secondary selection criterion. That usually changes the moment a website is down, emails are not delivered, or an error occurs after an update.

When comparing different web hosts, it should therefore be checked whether, how support is actually organized.

Helpful questions include, for example:

Is there a direct technical contact person?

Through which channels can support be reached?

Is support also available outside of traditional office hours?

Are technical issues actually investigated, or are users merely referred to documentation?

Does the provider also assist with migrations and configuration questions?

CURIAWEB offers personalized Swiss support from Chur. Our support is available around the clock. It is important to us not only to receive problems, but also to investigate their technical causes as comprehensibly as possible.

We also discuss why support plays a bigger role in hosting than is often assumed in the article Web hosting support: Why personal support matters.

A free website migration can save a lot of work

Anyone who already owns a website does not just compare hosting prices. The effort involved in switching providers also plays a role.

A website migration can include several components depending on the system: files, databases, e-mail accounts, DNS settings, SSL certificates and, if applicable, other services must be taken into account.

Errors during the transition can lead to website or email communication outages.

Therefore, it is worth checking before a switch whether the new hosting provider offers migration support and which services are actually included in it.

CURIAWEB offers for new hosting customers a free website migration service. Before a migration, we examine the existing environment and coordinate the necessary steps.

Cheap hosting is not automatically bad hosting

The price is, of course, a legitimate comparison criterion. However, a higher price does not automatically guarantee better performance any more than a low price implies poor quality.

What matters is the relationship between price, technical resources, and included services.

For example, seemingly affordable hosting can become less attractive if important features have to be paid for separately. Conversely, a comprehensive package can be unnecessarily expensive if a customer does not need a large portion of the services included at all.

Therefore, not only should the monthly price be compared, but also the total performance actually required.

This includes, for example, storage space, resources, email, backups, SSL, security, support, and, if applicable, assistance with migration.

Unlimited hosting should be questioned more closely

Terms like „unlimited“ or „unbegrenzt“ seem attractive in hosting offers. Technically, however, every server has finite resources.

Even if storage space or data traffic, for example, are described as unlimited, other limits may apply. These include CPU, memory, number of simultaneously running processes, I/O performance, number of files, or acceptable use conditions.

This does not mean that offers with unlimited services are fundamentally problematic. Customers should simply check, what technical or contractual limits actually apply.

Transparent resource allocations are therefore often more helpful for comparisons than a single large „unlimited“ promise.

How scalable is the hosting?

A website can start small and grow over time. More visitors, additional plugins, an online store, or more extensive content can change the requirements.

Therefore, a hosting offer should not only fit the current situation. It is also interesting to see how easily one can later switch to a larger package or a more powerful environment.

This applies especially to companies that are actively developing their website further.

We explain more on this topic in our guide Scalable Web Hosting: When the Website Grows with the Business.

For SMEs, different criteria often apply than for private websites

For a private website, a brief outage can be annoying. For a corporate website, downtime, failed email accounts, or a damaged online store can have a direct business impact.

For SMEs, factors such as support, backup, security, and reliable e-mail communication are therefore gaining additional importance.

Simple administration also plays a role. Not every smaller company employs its own IT department. Hosting should therefore be designed so that everyday tasks can be handled intuitively and a contact person is available for more complex problems.

For these requirements, we have our information on Hosting for SMEs compiled.

Comparing web hosting providers: These questions help with the decision

Instead of comparing hosting offers based solely on price and storage space, a broader comparison is worthwhile.

Before making a decision, at least the following points should be clarified:

Criterion

What should be checked?

Provider

Where is the company located and who is the contracting party?

Server location

In which country is the hosting infrastructure located?

Storage

How much storage is available and what storage technology is used?

Resources

What CPU, RAM, I/O, and process limits apply?

PHP

Which PHP versions are available and can they be selected by the user?

Backups

How often is backup taken, how long are backups kept, and how does a restore work?

Safety

What additional protection mechanisms are there in addition to SSL?

Email

Do email mailboxes include attachments and which protocols are supported?

Support

How and when is technical support available?

Migration

Does the provider assist with the migration of an existing website?

Scaling

Can the package be easily changed to a larger size later on?

Costs

Which services are included and which incur additional costs?

Which web hosting provider is the right one?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to that. The best hosting is the hosting that suits the actual requirements of a website and its operator.

A small club website requires different resources than a highly frequented WooCommerce store. A company that only needs professional email addresses has different requirements than an agency with several WordPress projects.

Therefore, a web hosting comparison should always be based on one's own usage.

Anyone who simply focuses on the lowest price for as much storage space as possible may overlook factors that will become significantly more important later on. Resources, backups, security, the up-to-date nature of the software, and accessible support are less spectacular than the big numbers in a price table – but they can be crucial in day-to-day operations.

Conclusion: Compare web hosting in Switzerland wisely

A meaningful comparison of Web hosting providers in Switzerland goes well beyond the storage space and monthly price.

In particular, check what resources are actually available, how backups and restores work, what security mechanisms are used, whether current PHP versions are available, and what support you receive in case of problems.

It is also important to make a clear distinction between the The hosting provider's headquarters and the location of its servers. Anyone who requires a specific data location should explicitly verify this.

CURIAWEB GmbH is a Swiss hosting provider with personal support from Chur and hosting infrastructure in Germany.
