Secure Data Transfer with WinSCP
WinSCP is a powerful, free open-source client for Windows. In addition to classic FTP, it supports the more secure SFTP protocol and offers two different user interfaces so you can work the way you are used to.
1. Download and Installation
Download the installation package directly from the manufacturer's website:
Choose the "Typical installation" during setup. An important step is choosing the user interface:
- Commander interface: Two panels side by side (ideal for Drag & Drop between PC and server).
- Explorer interface: A single window, similar to Windows File Explorer (ideal for beginners).
2. Setting up the First Connection
When you start WinSCP, the login window opens automatically:
- File protocol: Select FTP (for TLS/SSL encryption) or SFTP (recommended).
- Encryption: If you choose FTP, set "Encryption" to Explicit TLS/SSL implicit encryption.
- Host name: Enter your domain (e.g., yourdomain.ch) or the server IP.
- User name & Password: Your FTP credentials from cPanel.
3. Transferring Files
Once the connection is established, you can move files easily via Drag & Drop. WinSCP is particularly robust when transferring large volumes of data.
Troubleshooting
If the credentials are correct but no connection is established, a local firewall or antivirus program might be blocking port 21 (FTP) or 22 (SFTP). Check your security settings or use Passive Mode in WinSCP's advanced settings.
