Setting up Email Forwarders in cPanel

With the forwarding function, you can have incoming emails automatically sent to one or more other addresses. This is ideal if, for example, you want to use an address like sales@yourdomain.ch without managing a separate mailbox with its own login.

Important Difference:
  • If you already have an email account for the address, both the mailbox and the forwarder will receive a copy of the message.
  • If no mailbox exists, the message will only be forwarded.

Step 1: Access the Overview

In your cPanel, under the Email section, click on Forwarders.

Step 2: Add a New Forwarder

  1. Click the "Add Forwarder" button.
  2. Enter the name of the address you want to redirect (e.g., support).
  3. Select the corresponding domain.
  4. Under "Forward to Email Address", enter the destination (e.g., your private address).

Advanced Functions

When creating, click on "Advanced Options" for special scenarios:

Pipe to a Program Forwards the email to a script (e.g., PHP or Perl). Ideal for automated ticket systems.
Discard The email will be deleted. You can optionally send an error message back to the sender.

Domain Forwarders

Do you want to send all emails sent to old-domain.ch to the same users under new-domain.ch? Use "Add Domain Forwarder" for this. This saves time as you don't have to create each address individually.

Tracking & Testing

In the list of your forwarders, you will find the "Trace" option. This allows you to check the path an email takes and if there are delivery problems. A green globe indicates a successful forward to an external server.

Important Note: Existing forwarders cannot be edited directly. If you want to change the destination, you must delete the old forwarder and create a new one with the correct destination.
