The Catch-All Function: Never Lose a Message Again

The Default Email Address (often referred to as Catch-All) acts as a safety net for your communications. It ensures that emails sent to your domain that do not have an existing recipient address (e.g., due to a typo like infp@yourdomain.ch) do not simply disappear into thin air.

Step 1: Access Default Address in cPanel

On the cPanel home page, navigate to the Email section and click on the Default Address icon.

Step 2: Choose the Right Option

First, select the desired domain from the dropdown menu. You then have several options for how the server should handle misaddressed emails:

  • 1. Discard the message with an error message: The sender receives an automatic reply stating that the address does not exist. This is the recommended setting to avoid confirming to spam lists that your domain is active.
  • 2. Forward to Email Address: All misaddressed emails are delivered to a mailbox defined by you (e.g., your main address). This way, you are guaranteed not to miss anything.

Advanced Options

For specific requirements, you will find further tools under "Advanced Options":

  • Forward to your system account: Forwards emails to the internal cPanel account (usually only relevant for system logs).
  • Pipe to a Program: Sends the email directly to a script – useful for ticket systems or automated processes.

Beware of Spam:

A Catch-All mailbox often attracts massive amounts of spam, as spammers frequently test random combinations like admin@, sales@, webmaster@. If you notice an enormous increase in unsolicited mail, switch the function to "Discard message".
