Additional Access for Designers or Employees

By default, you have one primary FTP account for your hosting. However, in many cases, it makes sense to create **additional FTP accounts** – for example, if an external web designer should only have access to a specific folder without knowing your personal login details.

Step-by-Step: Creating a New Account

  1. Log in to your cPanel.
  2. Navigate to the Files section and click on FTP Accounts.

Filling in FTP Account Information

  • Login: Enter the name (e.g., designer). The full username will then be designer@yourdomain.ch.
  • Password: Be sure to use the Password Generator for maximum security.
  • Directory: Important point! cPanel automatically suggests a subfolder.
    • Should the user see the entire website? Delete everything except public_html/.
    • Should they only access a specific folder? Enter the path (e.g., public_html/project1).
  • Quota: Limit the storage space or select Unlimited.

Finally, click on Create FTP Account. You will receive a confirmation immediately.

What are "Special FTP Accounts"?

At the bottom of the page, you will find a table with special accounts. These were created automatically by the system (e.g., for logs or your primary account).
Important: These accounts cannot be deleted as they are directly linked to your hosting account.

Security Tip: Once a project is completed, you should remove FTP accounts that are no longer needed by clicking Delete in the "FTP Accounts" list. This keeps your server secure.

Exporting FTP Configuration

Want to make it easy? Under "Configure FTP Client," cPanel offers ready-made configuration files for FileZilla or CoreFTP. Simply download, import, and you won't have to type in any data manually.
