How to Manage Users in WordPress

WordPress includes a powerful user management system with different roles and permissions. In this guide, we’ll show you how to add, edit, delete users, and explain what each role can do.

User Roles in WordPress

Each user role has a specific level of access. Here are the main default roles:

  • Administrator – full control over the entire website
  • Editor – can publish and manage all posts (including others’)
  • Author – can write and publish their own posts
  • Contributor – can write but not publish posts
  • Subscriber – can register and comment

Adding a New User

To add a new user:

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to Users > Add New.
  3. Enter a username, email, and a strong password.
  4. Select the appropriate user role.
  5. Click Add New User.

Editing Users

To edit an existing user:

  1. Navigate to Users > All Users.
  2. Click the user you want to edit.
  3. Make changes such as role, name, password, or profile image.
  4. Save your changes.

Deleting Users

To remove a user from your site:

  1. Go to Users > All Users.
  2. Select the user you wish to delete.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. You can choose to assign the user’s posts to another user or delete them.

Changing User Roles

You can change a user's role at any time:

  1. Go to Users > All Users.
  2. Check the box next to the user.
  3. Select a new role from the “Change role to…” dropdown menu.
  4. Click Change.

User Management Tips

  • Only give Administrator access to people you fully trust.
  • Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication if possible.
  • For temporary access (e.g. for developers), create short-term accounts.
