Going Global: Setting Up Multilingual Support in Joomla

Joomla is renowned for its excellent native multilingual capabilities. You don't need expensive additional tools to offer your site in multiple languages, such as German and English.

Step 1: Install Languages

In the backend, go to System -> Languages. Click "Install Languages" and search for the desired language (e.g., "English"). Once installed, the language pack is available on your server.

Step 2: Assign Content

Joomla requires a dedicated structure for each language:

  • Create separate menus for each language.
  • Assign categories and articles to the respective language (instead of "All").
  • Activate the "System - Language Filter" plugin so Joomla can detect the visitor's preferred language.

Once you publish the "Language Switcher" module, your visitors can easily switch between languages using flags or names.
