Securely Block Exclusive Content

With the Directory Privacy feature, you can protect individual folders on your website with a password. This is ideal for internal documents, staging environments, or exclusive download areas for your customers. Once the protection is active, every visitor will be asked for a username and password when accessing the directory.

Security Bonus: This protection takes place at the server level. This means it is active even before a CMS like WordPress is loaded, making it particularly secure against script-level attacks.

Setting Up Password Protection

  1. In cPanel, navigate to Security » Directory Privacy.
  2. Select the directory you wish to protect. Click the folder icon to navigate deeper into the structure, or click the folder name to select it.
  3. Check the box "Password protect this directory".
  4. Enter a name for the protected directory (this will be displayed to the visitor in the login window).
  5. Click Save.

Adding Users

Once protection is enabled, you must create authorized users:

  1. Under Create User, enter a desired username.
  2. Assign a strong password (it is best to use the password generator).
  3. Confirm by clicking Save.

Important Management Notes

➤ Multiple Users
You can create as many users as you like for the same folder. Each user will receive their own login credentials.
➤ Subfolders
Protection is automatically inherited by all subfolders, unless you configure a different setting there.
➤ Removal
To remove password protection, simply uncheck the box in the same menu and save again.

Combine this feature with Leech Protection to ensure that
users do not share their passwords with unauthorized third parties.
