The Hierarchy of the Internet: Registry vs. Registrar
When you register a domain with CuriaWeb, various entities work together in the background. To understand how the World Wide Web is organized, it helps to look at the distribution of roles.
The Registry
The registry is the top-level authority for a specific domain extension (TLD). It manages the central database. In Switzerland, the registry for .ch domains is Switch. For .com, it is Verisign, for example. The registry does not sell domains directly to end customers.
The Registrar (Your Partner CuriaWeb)
The registrar is a company accredited by the registry – like CuriaWeb. We act as your interface. When you order a domain from us, we forward this to the respective registry in real-time and manage the technology and billing for you.
Why is this important for you?
In case of problems or transfers, CuriaWeb, as your registrar, is your direct contact. You don't have to deal with the large registries – we handle all communication and technology in the background for you.
