The Powerful Joomla Permissions System

Joomla is renowned for its extremely fine-grained access control. You can define exactly which actions are allowed in the backend or frontend for every user group.

Basics of Permission Settings:

In the "Permissions" tab, you will see a matrix of your user groups (e.g., Guest, Registered, Manager, Administrator).

  • Allowed: The permission is explicitly granted.
  • Inherited: The setting is taken from the parent group.
  • Not Allowed / Denied: The action is blocked for this group.

If you want your web designer to be able to edit articles but not change global server settings, give them the rights of an Administrator, but set the "Configuration" field for their group to "Not Allowed".
