Filter Settings: Optimizing your Spam Protection

The default configuration of SpamExperts already offers excellent protection. However, there are scenarios where fine-tuning the Filter Settings is necessary to find the perfect balance between security and accessibility.

The Quarantine Threshold

Every incoming email undergoes a deep analysis and receives a Spam Score based on hundreds of criteria. The higher this value, the more likely the message is unwanted.

How the logic works:

  • Lower Value (e.g., 0.35): The filter acts stricter. Spam is caught earlier, but the risk of false positives increases.
  • Higher Value (e.g., 0.60): The filter acts more tolerant. More emails pass through, potentially including "gray-area" spam.

Our recommendation: Only change the value in small increments of maximum 0.05 and monitor the quarantine for several days.

Important Additional Options

  • Reject Unrecognized Recipients: Enable this option so that emails to non-existent addresses are rejected immediately. This significantly reduces the load on your mail server.
  • SPF & DKIM Check: These protocols verify the sender's identity. A strict setting effectively protects against phishing and sender spoofing.
  • Quarantine Reports: Configure how often your users should be informed about blocked emails.
Pro-Tip for Administrators:
Before tightening the global filter, check if the problem can be solved by targeted Whitelisting or Blacklisting. A global setting that is too strict can hinder important business communication.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do legitimate emails end up in spam?
This can be due to an overly strict threshold or a technical misconfiguration (missing SPF/DKIM) on the sender's side.
