Patience is a Virtue (in DNS)
Have you just changed your nameservers or set a new A record, but the website is still showing the old content? Don't worry, this is completely normal. This process is called DNS propagation.
What happens during propagation?
The internet consists of thousands of DNS servers worldwide. When you make a change in cPanel, this information must be passed from server to server. It's like a message spreading through a snowball system:
- Your server knows the new IP immediately.
- Internet Service Providers (Swisscom, Sunrise, Telekom, etc.) often store old entries in their cache for several hours.
- Your own computer or browser also often clings to the old path.
How long does it really take?
As a rule, the worldwide update takes between 1 and 24 hours. In rare cases (e.g., with a complete nameserver change), it can take up to 48 hours.
What can I do to speed it up?
- Clear browser cache: Often, clearing your browser history helps.
- DNS Flush: Restart your router or clear your operating system's DNS cache (Windows:
ipconfig /flushdns). - Test a different network: Check the website via your smartphone (mobile data instead of Wi-Fi) to bypass your local router's cache.
