A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual server instance with its own dedicated resources, such as vCPUs, RAM, and storage space. Unlike traditional web hosting, you get your own server environment with root access and can configure the operating system, software, and services largely on your own.
The CURIAWEB VPS cloud servers are therefore suitable for websites, web applications, development environments, databases, and many other server projects.
In the classic case Web hosting several customers share a preconfigured hosting environment. The administration of the server is handled by the hosting provider. This is usually the simpler solution for corporate websites, WordPress, and many other websites.
With a VPS cloud server, on the other hand, you get your own virtual server environment with root access and significantly more freedom of configuration. With an unmanaged VPS, however, you are responsible for administration, updates, and security yourself.
Our VPS cloud servers are provided unmanaged, meaning self-managed. You receive full root access and manage your server environment independently.
You are responsible for installing and configuring software, operating system and security updates, server hardening, and ongoing administration. This gives you maximum freedom in configuring your VPS.
Root access grants you comprehensive administrative rights on your Linux VPS. You can install software, configure services, manage users, and customize the server environment to suit your project's requirements.
However, this requires appropriate knowledge of Linux and server administration.
Various Linux operating systems are available for the VPS cloud servers. This allows you to choose the operating system that best suits your project, your software, and your personal requirements.

For Swiss and European projects, a European location is in many cases the obvious choice. International locations can make sense if your users are predominantly located in a different region of the world.
For a website with predominantly Swiss or European visitors, we generally recommend a European server location. The geographical proximity can enable short network paths and, in the case of personal data, often simplifies the classification under data protection law compared to third countries.
However, which location is optimal depends on the specific project, the target audience, and the data processing requirements.
Our VPS cloud servers use virtual CPU resources on a shared cloud infrastructure. The underlying computing power is therefore shared with other instances on the host.
This server class is particularly suitable for workloads with low to medium or fluctuating CPU utilization. For consistently very CPU-intensive applications, servers with dedicated CPU resources are the more suitable solution.
This depends on the operating system, the software, the number of services, the database size, the visitor volume, and the actual workload.
While a few resources may be sufficient for smaller projects, databases, multiple containers, or more extensive applications require significantly more RAM and computing power. If you are not sure, you should plan with a sufficient reserve and then monitor the actual resource utilization.
No, automatic backups are not included by default with our VPS cloud servers. However, they can be added as an option for 5 CHF per month.
This option regularly creates backups of your server so that you can revert to an earlier state in the event of a problem. Especially with an unmanaged VPS, we recommend a reliable backup strategy.
Important: Even with the backup option enabled, you should plan for additional, independent backups for business-critical data.
Using an unmanaged VPS requires knowledge of Linux, server administration, and IT security. You are solely responsible for correctly configuring the server, keeping it up to date, and securing it against unauthorized access.
If you only have a website, WordPress or a Online shop want to operate and do not want to deal with server administration yourself, a classic or managed Hosting offer often the more suitable solution.
