Create an email account in cPanel

Reading time approx.: 10 minutes

With an email account in cPanel, you create your own mailbox under your domain, for example info@deine-domain.ch, kontakt@deine-domain.ch or vorname@deine-domain.ch.

In this guide, we will show you step by step how to create a new email account in cPanel on CURIAWEB, set a secure password, and configure the available storage space.

Briefly explained: An email account is a real mailbox with its own email address and password. It can then be used, for example, via webmail or an email client. A simple forwarding address, on the other hand, is not a separate mailbox.

What do you need for a new email account? #

Before you begin, you should know which email address you want to create and under which of your domains it should be set up.

If your hosting provider, for example, the domain your-domain.ch is assigned, can you make an address out of it like info@deine-domain.ch create.

Additionally, you need access to your CURIAWEB cPanel.

1. Open the Email Accounts section in cPanel #

Log in to your CURIAWEB cPanel.

Scroll on the cPanel home page to the section Email and click on Email accounts.

Here, the existing email accounts of your domains are displayed and managed.

Note: If you first want to know what features the entire email section offers, you can find an overview at cPanel Email: All features at a glance.

2. Create a new email account #

Click in the overview Email accounts on the button to Create of a new email account.

cPanel then opens the form for the new mailbox.

If multiple domains are assigned to your hosting, pay special attention to which domain you are creating the account for.

3. Select the correct domain #

Select in the field Domain the domain under which the new e-mail address is to be set up.

Does your hosting have, for example:

your-domain.ch

and

zweite-domain.ch

can a username Info result in different email addresses depending on the selected domain:

info@deine-domain.ch

or:

info@zweite-domain.ch

Attention: Check the selected domain before creating the account. Especially with hosting accounts that have multiple domains, a mailbox is easily created under the wrong domain by mistake.

4. Enter username for email address #

Enter in the field Username Enter the part of the email address that comes before the character @ should stand.

For the requested address:

info@deine-domain.ch

do you enter, for example:

Info

The selected domain is supplemented by cPanel.

What name should you use? #

For general business functions, depending on the intended use, addresses such as the following are suitable:

  • info@deine-domain.ch
  • kontakt@deine-domain.ch
  • support@deine-domain.ch
  • rechnung@deine-domain.ch

For personal mailboxes, for example, vorname@deine-domain.ch be used.

Use addresses that are as understandable as possible and match the actual intended use.

5. Set password for the email account #

In the next step, the new email account needs a password.

Depending on the displayed cPanel option, you can set the password directly or generate a strong password using the integrated password generator.

Use a long and unique password that is not used for other services.

Important: Do not use the same password for the email account as for cPanel, WordPress, the CURIAWEB customer center, or other services. Each account should have its own unique password.

Why is the email password particularly important? #

A compromised email account can be abused not only for reading messages. Attackers can attempt to use it to send spam or fraudulent messages, or to exploit email-based password recoveries of other services.

A strong password used exclusively for this mailbox reduces the risk that a password compromised at another service will also endanger your email account.

6. Set password yourself or send setup link #

Depending on the available cPanel interface, creating an email account may additionally offer the option to send an alternative login or setup link to another email address.

This can be practical if you are creating the mailbox for another person and do not want to set their final password yourself.

If you use the account yourself, you can set the password directly when creating it.

Safety: If a mailbox is intended for another person, you should not pass on access data unnecessarily via insecure communication channels. If possible, use the secure setup mechanisms provided for this purpose.

7. Set storage space for the email account #

Under the optional settings, you can specify how much storage space the new email account is allowed to use.

This value limits the storage space of the individual mailbox within the available storage space of your hosting account.

A mailbox with many messages and large attachments correspondingly requires more storage space than a contact mailbox that is only used occasionally.

Should you set a fixed storage location? #

A fixed limit can be useful if multiple email accounts use the same hosting storage and you want to prevent a single mailbox from taking up a disproportionately large share of it.

Which options and maximum values are displayed to you depends on your hosting account and the server configuration.

Important: A high or displayed as unlimited value does not mean that there is actually unlimited physical storage space. Email data still counts toward your hosting account's storage usage and is subject to its available resources.

8. Check further settings #

cPanel can display additional optional settings when creating an email account.

Which options are available depends on the cPanel version used and the configuration of the hosting server.

If you do not have a specific reason to change a setting, you can usually keep the default values provided.

9. Create an email account #

Before saving, check the most important details again:

  • Is the correct domain selected?
  • Is the username spelled correctly?
  • Is a secure password set up?
  • Does the selected storage limit fit?

Then click on Create.

cPanel creates the new email account. Afterwards, it should appear in your email account overview.

10. Check if the email account exists #

Open or update the overview after creation Email accounts.

Check whether the new address is displayed completely there and under the correct domain.

For a successfully created address, you should see, for example:

info@deine-domain.ch

This means the mailbox has been created on the hosting.

Practical Tip: Do not just copy the full email address from memory. Check it in cPanel after creating it. A small typo in the username can later unnecessarily make it seem like a delivery issue for a long time.

11. Test email account via webmail #

After creation, you should check if you can access the new mailbox.

In the overview Email accounts Does cPanel provide management or access options for existing accounts? Depending on the interface, you can use them to access Webmail, among other things.

Log in with the newly created mailbox and check if access works.

This also allows you to check at the same time whether you have the correct email address and password.

12. Send a test message #

A newly created mailbox should then be tested practically.

Send a message via webmail to another email address you have access to. Then reply from that address back to the new mailbox.

This allows you to check two different directions:

  • Can the new account send messages?
  • Can the new account receive messages?

Only when both tests work will you know that the mailbox can generally be used for email traffic.

Important: Successfully creating an email account and a working login do not automatically prove that every external email will be delivered correctly. Domain and mail configurations, as well as various deliverability factors, play a role in delivery, among other things.

Email account or forwarding – what is the difference? #

A Email account has its own mailbox. Messages can be stored there and retrieved using, for example, webmail, IMAP, or other supported access methods.

A Forwarding receives messages for one address and forwards them to another destination address.

For example, if you merely want messages to arrive at an additional address for an already existing mailbox, a forward may be sufficient.

We show you how to set these up at Set up email forwarding in cPanel.

Email account or default address? #

Also the Default address or rather, a so-called catch-all should not be confused with a normal mailbox.

A default address can handle messages sent to non-existent recipients of your domain.

If, on the other hand, you enter a specific address like info@deine-domain.ch want to use reliably, you should set up a regular email account for this or – depending on the intended use – a targeted forwarding.

We cover the standard address in detail under Default Address in cPanel: Catch-All and Unknown Recipients.

What happens when the mailbox is full? #

If an email account reaches its configured storage limit, this can affect the further reception of messages.

Therefore, you should regularly check the memory consumption, especially in heavily used mailboxes.

Large file attachments and messages stored over years can significantly increase the required storage space.

We show how to inspect and clean up your email storage at Check and clean up email storage in cPanel.

The new account is not receiving emails #

If the mailbox was created correctly but no messages from external senders are arriving, you should not immediately delete and recreate the account.

First, check whether the complete recipient address was spelled correctly and whether messages to other accounts on the same domain are being delivered.

For domains whose email traffic is handled via external mail servers, email routing can also play an important role.

We cover how this setting works under Email routing in cPanel explained.

Message has been sent, but is not arriving #

When a message appears as sent in webmail, it does not automatically mean that it was successfully accepted by the destination server and delivered to the recipient.

cPanel therefore provides tools that allow you to examine the history of email deliveries in more detail.

We show the procedure at Track email delivery in cPanel.

Check email deliverability #

For reliable email communication, an existing mailbox alone is not enough. The technical configuration of the domain also plays a role.

cPanel offers the section for this Email deliverability. There, important information regarding the domain's mail configuration can be checked.

We explain how to use this function at Check email deliverability in cPanel.

Change the email account later #

An existing email account does not need to be deleted and recreated just because you want to change its password or storage limit, for example.

Such settings can be adjusted via the management of the existing account.

We will show how this works and when an account should actually be deleted in the next article under Manage or delete email account in cPanel.

Attention: Do not delete an existing email account just to replace a forgotten password. Deleting a mailbox can result in the loss of emails stored within it.

Use email address in Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird #

After creation, you can use the mailbox not only via webmail, but also set it up in a compatible email program.

This requires the appropriate settings for the incoming and outgoing mail servers as well as the corresponding ports and encryption options.

This client configuration is not part of the actual creation of the mailbox in cPanel and is therefore handled separately in our category for email and SpamExperts.

Typical mistakes when creating an email account #

Many problems can be avoided if you check a few points before creating.

Particularly common are an accidentally selected wrong domain, a typo in the username, a password that is later forgotten, or a storage limit set too tightly.

The assumption that an email account automatically configures forwarding or an external email client also leads to misunderstandings. These functions are set up separately.

Summary #

You can create a new email account in your CURIAWEB cPanel under Email -> Email accounts.

Choose the correct domain, set the desired username, and use a strong, unique password. Afterward, you can check the storage space limit and create the account.

Check afterwards whether the new mailbox appears in the account overview, log in via webmail and test both sending and receiving a message.

If the account needs to be adjusted later, you should not delete it unnecessarily. The password, storage space, and other account settings can be changed through the management of the existing email account.
