You can enter your CURIAWEB email address directly in Apple Mail on your Mac set up. You can then receive, manage, and send emails using the pre-installed Mail app on macOS.
For the setup, we recommend IMAP. Your messages will remain stored on the mail server and can be synchronized between your Mac, smartphone, tablet, and webmail.
Important: Before you begin, the desired email address must already be set up on your CURIAWEB hosting. You will need your full email address and the password of the email account in question.
You need these CURIAWEB email settings #
For standard setup in Apple Mail, use the following server details:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Username | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
| Incoming mail server | mail.your-domain.ch |
| IMAP port | 993 |
| POP3 port | 995 |
| Outgoing mail server (SMTP) | mail.your-domain.ch |
| SMTP port | 465 |
| Authentication | Required for IMAP, POP3 and SMTP |
Example: Is your email address
info@meine-firma.ch, you use as a usernameinfo@meine-firma.chand as a mail servermail.meine-firma.ch.
Why we recommend IMAP for Apple Mail #
Apple Mail can manage email accounts using different protocols. For a standard CURIAWEB email account, we recommend IMAP.
With IMAP, your messages remain on the mail server. Apple Mail synchronizes the message inventory with the server.
This allows you to use the same mailbox simultaneously on your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and via webmail, for example.
When you read, move, or delete a message on your Mac, this change can also be reflected on your other devices connected via IMAP.
POP3 is also available, but is generally less suitable for using the same mailbox on multiple devices.
Our recommendation: Use IMAP via port
993with SSL/TLS and SMTP over port465with SSL/TLS.
Add CURIAWEB e-mail account to Apple Mail #
Open the app Mail on your Mac.
When you use Apple Mail for the first time, the selection of a mail provider may appear automatically.
If other email accounts are already set up, open in the menu bar:
Mail → Add account
Apple will now show you various well-known email providers.
Since a normal CURIAWEB email address is not an iCloud, Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo account, you select:
Other email account
Then click on Continue.
Enter name, email address, and password #
Apple Mail is now asking for basic account information.
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Name | The name that should be displayed on outgoing emails |
| Email address | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
For a business address, you can use your personal name or the name of your company as the name, for example.
For example, the actual email address is:
info@meine-firma.ch
Attention: Use the password of the email account in question. This is not automatically the same password as for your CURIAWEB customer center, cPanel, or your Mac.
Manual configuration of server data #
Apple Mail first tries to automatically detect the server settings.
If the configuration cannot be completed automatically, you can enter the required server data manually.
Select as account type:
IMAP
For the incoming and outgoing mail server, you use your domain's mail server.
Set up incoming mail server in Apple Mail #
For the incoming mail, you use the following settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Account type | IMAP |
| Incoming email server | mail.your-domain.ch |
| Username | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
| Port | 993 |
| SSL/TLS | Activated |
| Authentication | Required |
At the example domain meine-firma.ch is the incoming mail server:
mail.meine-firma.ch
For example, as a username you use:
info@meine-firma.ch
Important: Always use the full email address as the username and not just the part before the
@.
Setting up an outgoing mail server in Apple Mail #
For shipping, you use the following SMTP settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Outbound email server | mail.your-domain.ch |
| Username | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
| SMTP port | 465 |
| SSL/TLS | Activated |
| Authentication | Required |
For the example domain meine-firma.ch is the SMTP server:
mail.meine-firma.ch
Important: The SMTP server also requires a username and password. Authentication is required for sending via CURIAWEB.
Finish setting up account #
After you have entered the server data, Apple Mail will attempt to verify the connection.
Once the login is successful, you can choose which available features of the account should be used.
Make sure that Mail is activated and complete the setup.
The new mailbox should then appear in the Apple Mail sidebar.
CURIAWEB settings at a glance #
For the normal setup in Apple Mail, you use:
Username:
your full email address
Password:
Your email account password
Incoming mail server:
mail.your-domain.ch
IMAP:
Port 993
SSL/TLS
Authentication required
Outgoing mail server:
mail.your-domain.ch
SMTP:
Port 465
SSL/TLS
Authentication required
POP3 is also available encrypted via port 995 available. However, for use on the Mac and several other devices, we recommend IMAP.
Check server settings later #
If the account is already set up but not working correctly, you can check the settings in Apple Mail afterwards.
To do this, open:
Mail → Settings → Accounts
Then select the relevant email account.
Depending on the macOS version, you can find the server settings in the section Server settings.
There you can check the settings for the incoming and outgoing mail server.
Automatic management of connection settings #
Apple Mail can automatically manage certain connection settings. This allows port and security settings to be configured partially automatically.
If your account is working correctly, there is usually no reason to change this automatic management.
However, in the event of connection issues, it may be useful to check the server data actually being used.
For the normal CURIAWEB configuration, the following apply:
IMAP: 993 / SSL/TLS
SMTP: 465 / SSL/TLS
Practical Tip: Don't change working settings on a hunch. If Apple Mail uses the account correctly via the intended servers and encrypted connections, you should keep the configuration.
Send a test email after setup #
After successful setup, you should test both sending and receiving.
Send a new message to another email address you have access to.
Then reply to this message.
With this, you check the outgoing SMTP transmission and the incoming IMAP reception.
Apple Mail can receive but not send #
When new emails arrive, but you cannot send messages, the IMAP connection is working in principle.
Then check the SMTP server in particular.
For the standard CURIAWEB configuration:
SMTP Server: mail.deine-domain.ch
Port: 465
SSL/TLS: enabled
Authentication: required
Username: full email address
Password: email account password
Check in particular whether a username and password are actually saved for the outgoing mail server.
Apple Mail can send, but not receive emails #
If sending works, but no new messages appear, check the IMAP server settings.
IMAP Server: mail.deine-domain.ch
Port: 993
SSL/TLS: enabled
Authentication: required
Username: full email address
Password: email account password
Then check in webmail whether the expected messages are there.
If they are visible in webmail but not in Apple Mail, the problem is likely with the configuration or synchronization on the Mac.
Use webmail as a cross-check #
If you have problems with Apple Mail, webmail is a simple cross-check.
Log in there using the same full email address and password.
If you can send and receive messages via webmail, your email account and server-side login are basically working.
The problem is then likely with Apple Mail or its account settings.
We explain how to use webmail at Use Webmail.
Apple Mail keeps asking for the password #
If Apple Mail repeatedly asks for the password, you should first check whether the saved login credentials are correct.
Use your full email address as your username.
Example:
info@meine-firma.ch
Then test the same email address and the same password in webmail.
Does the login work there? Check both the IMAP and SMTP server settings in Apple Mail.
After a password change, Apple Mail no longer works #
If you changed your email account password, your Mac might still have the previous password saved.
Therefore, update the access credentials in the account configuration.
The new password is required for both logging into the IMAP server and for sending via SMTP.
Apple Mail says „Account name/password could not be verified“ #
This message can have various causes and does not automatically mean that the mail server is unreachable.
First, check:
- the complete email address as username
- the email account password
- the server name
mail.your-domain.ch - IMAP port
993 - SMTP port
465 - SSL/TLS
- the authentication on the outgoing mail server
Test the access credentials afterwards in webmail.
Do not simply accept certificate warnings #
If Apple Mail displays a warning regarding the mail server's SSL/TLS certificate, you should not simply ignore it.
First, check the entered server name.
In the normal CURIAWEB configuration, it follows this schema:
mail.your-domain.ch
With the domain meine-firma.ch would this be:
mail.meine-firma.ch
Safety Notice: A certificate warning can indicate that the server name used does not match the SSL/TLS certificate. Check the configuration before confirming such a warning.
Troubleshoot connection issues with the connection test #
Apple Mail provides a for troubleshooting Connection test Ready.
You can find them in Apple Mail via:
Window → Check connection
call up.
There you can check whether Apple Mail can connect to the servers used for your accounts.
This is particularly helpful when it is not clear whether a problem affects the incoming mail server, the outgoing mail server, or the login.
Practical Tip: If multiple email accounts are set up in Apple Mail, make sure to check which account or server is causing the error when testing the connection.
Apple Mail is offline #
If Apple Mail cannot connect to an account, a mailbox or account may appear as offline.
First check your internet connection and then use the connection test to verify whether the mail server is reachable.
If webmail works without any issues simultaneously, you should check the local configuration of Apple Mail.
Sent emails or drafts appear in the wrong folder #
With IMAP, various mail folders are also managed on the server.
In certain configurations, it can happen that an email program uses a different folder for sent messages, drafts, trash, or junk email than another email program.
If this creates duplicate or incorrectly assigned folders, you should not simply delete messages or folders.
First, check which server-side IMAP folders Apple Mail uses for the respective functions.
Why do changes also appear on iPhone and other devices? #
This is intended behavior with an IMAP configuration.
The message inventory is managed on the mail server. Apple Mail synchronizes the corresponding information with the server.
For example, if you mark a message as read on your Mac or move it to another IMAP folder, this change can then also be visible on your iPhone, iPad, in Outlook, or in webmail.
Calendar and contacts are not automatically synchronized via IMAP #
IMAP is used for synchronizing emails and mail folders.
Setting up your CURIAWEB email address as an IMAP account in Apple Mail therefore does not automatically mean that calendars and contacts will be synchronized via IMAP.
Mail, calendar, and contacts are technically different services and should not be confused with one another.
SpamExperts Incoming Filtering does not change the Apple Mail settings #
If SpamExperts Incoming Filtering is used for your domain, incoming messages are first processed by SpamExperts and then forwarded to the actual mail server.
Apple Mail continues to access your mailbox directly.
Therefore, the IMAP server remains:
mail.your-domain.ch
You are using Do not use a SpamExperts MX server as an IMAP server in Apple Mail.
Briefly explained: MX records control where other mail servers deliver messages for your domain. IMAP, on the other hand, allows Apple Mail to access the messages in your mailbox.
SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering as a special case #
If SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering is explicitly used for your email account, the SMTP configuration may differ from the normal CURIAWEB settings.
In this case, use the SMTP data designated for SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering.
We explain the setup at Set up SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering.
Remove email account from Mac #
If an account has been set up completely incorrectly, it may make sense to remove the configuration and then set it up again properly.
Depending on the macOS version, account management is done via Apple Mail or the System Settings for Internet Accounts.
Important: Removing an IMAP account from your Mac does not automatically delete the actual email account on the CURIAWEB mail server. Before making any changes, however, make sure that no important messages or other data are stored exclusively locally on the Mac.
Common setup errors in Apple Mail #
| Problem | Common cause |
|---|---|
| Account cannot be verified | Incorrect login credentials or server settings |
| Email reception is not working | IMAP server, port or SSL/TLS incorrect |
| Shipping is not working | Incorrect SMTP server, port, or authentication |
| Apple Mail keeps asking for the password | Incorrect or outdated password saved |
| Certificate warning | Server name might not match the SSL/TLS certificate |
| Webmail works, Apple Mail doesn't | Problem likely with the local Apple Mail configuration |
| Folders appear twice or incorrectly | Different mapping of server-side IMAP folders |
| Calendar or contacts missing | IMAP does not sync this data automatically |
| SpamExperts-MX entered as mail server | MX server was confused with the IMAP/SMTP server |
Summary #
You can use a CURIAWEB email address directly in the pre-installed Mail app on macOS.
When adding the account Other email account and set up the account as IMAP account one.
For the inbox, you use:
mail.your-domain.ch
with IMAP port 993 and SSL/TLS.
You also use for the outbox:
mail.your-domain.ch
with SMTP port 465, SSL/TLS and authentication.
For your username, you always use your for both incoming and outgoing mail. full email address. The password is the password of the email account in question.
POP3 over port 995 is also available. However, for use on the Mac and several other devices, we recommend IMAP.
If Apple Mail is not working, you can first test your login credentials in webmail and then via Window → Check connection check whether Apple Mail can connect to the mail servers.
For a standard CURIAWEB email address on a Mac, we recommend using IMAP with SSL/TLS. This keeps your inbox synchronized across Apple Mail, mobile devices, and webmail.
