You can enter your CURIAWEB email address directly in the pre-installed Mail app on your iPhone or iPad set up. Afterwards, you can receive, reply to, and send emails via Apple Mail without having to log in to webmail every time.
For the setup, we recommend IMAP. Your emails remain stored on the mail server and can be synchronized between multiple devices as well as webmail.
Important: Before you begin, the desired email account must already be set up on your CURIAWEB hosting. You will need your full email address and the password for the email account in question.
You need these CURIAWEB email settings #
For the setup, you use your email account credentials and the mail server of your own domain.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Username | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
| Incoming mail server | mail.your-domain.ch |
| IMAP port | 993 |
| POP3 port | 995 |
| Outgoing mail server (SMTP) | mail.your-domain.ch |
| SMTP port | 465 |
| Authentication | Required for IMAP, POP3 and SMTP |
Example: If your email address
info@meine-firma.chis, you use as a usernameinfo@meine-firma.chand as a mail servermail.meine-firma.ch.
IMAP or POP3 – which one should you use? #
Apple Mail can generally retrieve email accounts via IMAP or POP3. For normal use with CURIAWEB, we recommend IMAP.
With IMAP, the messages remain stored on the mail server. This allows changes to be synchronized between different devices.
This is especially practical if you use the same email account on your iPhone, iPad, computer, and additionally via webmail, for example.
A message read on the iPhone can also appear as read on the computer as a result. If you move or delete a message, this change is also synchronized with the server.
POP3, on the other hand, is more focused on retrieving messages to a single device. For modern use across multiple devices, IMAP is therefore usually the better choice.
Our recommendation: Use IMAP with port on iPhone and iPad
993and an encrypted SSL/TLS connection.
Add an email account on your iPhone or iPad #
Open the app on your iPhone or iPad Settings.
Then go to:
Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts
Tap on Add account.
Apple will now show you various well-known email providers. A regular CURIAWEB email address is not an iCloud, Google, Yahoo, or Outlook.com account.
Therefore, choose the option for a other account or rather Add another account and then Email account.
Enter name, email address, and password #
Apple Mail is now asking for the basic information for your email account.
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Name | The name that should be displayed as the sender on your outgoing emails |
| Your complete email address | |
| Password | The email account password |
| Description | A freely selectable name for the account |
For example, you can use the following as a description:
CURIAWEB Mail
or, in the case of multiple accounts, a more descriptive name such as:
Business
Then tap on Continue.
Attention: The password for the email account is not automatically the same as your password for the CURIAWEB customer center or cPanel. Use the password that was set for the respective email address.
Select IMAP #
If Apple Mail cannot automatically determine the settings, the manual server configuration appears.
Choose above IMAP.
Now the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server must be entered.
Enter incoming mail server #
In the section Incoming email server do you use the following settings:
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Hostname | mail.your-domain.ch |
| Username | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
| IMAP port | 993 |
| SSL/TLS | Activated |
| Authentication | Required |
For example, if your email address is:
info@meine-firma.ch
is, do you also use as your username:
info@meine-firma.ch
and as incoming mail server:
mail.meine-firma.ch
Important: Always use the full email address as the username and not just the part before the
@.
Enter outgoing mail server #
In the section Outbound email server are you using the following SMTP settings:
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Hostname | mail.your-domain.ch |
| Username | Your complete email address |
| Password | Email account password |
| SMTP port | 465 |
| SSL/TLS | Activated |
| Authentication | Required |
For the example domain meine-firma.ch does the SMTP server correspond to:
mail.meine-firma.ch
Important: Username and password must also be entered for the outgoing mail server. Authentication is required for SMTP sending.
Why does the outgoing mail server also need a password? #
Upon receiving, Apple Mail logs in to the IMAP server. Upon sending, a separate login to the SMTP server takes place.
Therefore, Apple Mail requires valid credentials for both the incoming and outgoing mail servers.
In both cases, you use your full email address as the username and the password of the respective email account.
Verify and save account #
After entering the server data, tap Continue.
Apple Mail is now trying to connect to the mail server and verify the entered credentials.
The review may take a moment.
If the settings have been successfully verified, make sure that Mail is activated for the account and save the configuration.
Which ports does CURIAWEB use? #
For an encrypted connection, you use the following ports in the standard CURIAWEB mail configuration:
| Minutes | Port | Use |
|---|---|---|
| IMAP | 993 | Email reception and synchronization via SSL/TLS |
| POP3 | 995 | Email retrieval via SSL/TLS |
| SMTP | 465 | Email sending via SSL/TLS |
For iPhone and iPad, we recommend IMAP over port 993. For shipping, you use SMTP over port 465.
SSL/TLS should be enabled #
An encrypted SSL/TLS connection should be used for incoming and outgoing mail.
Among other things, this ensures that logging into the mail server and the communication between your iPhone or iPad and the server are transmitted in encrypted form.
Safety Notice: Use encrypted connections via IMAP
993and SMTP465. You shouldn't simply ignore certificate warnings or permanently accept them.
Send first test email #
After the account has been set up, open the Mail app.
Create a new message and send it as a test to another email address you have access to.
Then check:
- whether the message is sent without an error message
- whether it reaches the recipient
- whether a response arrives on your iPhone or iPad
This tests both outgoing SMTP sending and incoming IMAP reception.
Receiving works, but sending doesn't #
If you can receive emails but sending fails, the IMAP connection is basically working. The problem is then often with the configuration of the SMTP server.
Check in particular:
- Outgoing mail server
mail.your-domain.ch - SMTP port
465 - SSL/TLS enabled
- full email address as username
- correct password of the email account
- SMTP authentication enabled
Typical error: Username and password are only entered for the incoming mail server. For CURIAWEB, however, Apple Mail must also authenticate with the SMTP server.
Sending works, but emails are not arriving #
If sending works, but new messages do not appear on the iPhone or iPad, first check the IMAP configuration.
For the normal CURIAWEB configuration, it should look like this:
Server: mail.deine-domain.ch
Port: 993
SSL/TLS: enabled
Username: full email address
Authentication: required
Then check via webmail whether the expected message is there.
If the message is visible in webmail but not in Apple Mail, the issue is very likely with the configuration or synchronization on the iPhone or iPad.
Use webmail as a cross-check #
Webmail is a particularly helpful cross-check for email issues.
If you can log in to webmail with your email address and password and send and receive messages there, the email account and server-side login are working in principle.
The problem is then more likely with the settings on the iPhone or iPad.
We explain how to use webmail at Use Webmail.
Apple Mail reports that the username or password is incorrect #
First, check if your username really is full email address you entered.
For example, the correct version would be:
info@meine-firma.ch
Not sufficient would be:
Info
Then check the password of the email account.
If you are unsure about the password, you can try logging into webmail with the same credentials.
If logging in there doesn't work either, you should check or reset the password for the email account.
After a password change, Apple Mail no longer works #
If the password of an email account has been changed, your iPhone or iPad may continue trying to sign in with the old password.
In this case, the stored credentials of the account must be updated.
Remember that the password is required for both the incoming IMAP server and the outgoing SMTP server.
Do not simply confirm the certificate warning #
If your iPhone or iPad displays an SSL/TLS certificate warning when establishing a connection, you should not simply accept it permanently.
First, check whether the mail server has been entered correctly.
In the standard CURIAWEB configuration, the server name follows this pattern:
mail.your-domain.ch
With the domain meine-firma.ch would this be, for example:
mail.meine-firma.ch
Attention: A certificate warning may indicate that the entered server name does not match the mail server's certificate. Do not simply bypass the warning; check your settings first.
Why do read or deleted messages also appear on other devices? #
This is fundamentally intended with IMAP.
IMAP manages the message collection centrally on the mail server. Changes can therefore be synchronized between connected devices.
For example, if you mark a message as read on your iPhone, it can then also appear as read on your iPad, computer, or in webmail.
Moving or deleting messages can also be synchronized accordingly.
Using multiple email accounts on iPhone or iPad #
You can set up multiple email accounts simultaneously in Apple Mail.
This is useful, for example, if you use different business addresses or an additional private email account.
When writing a new message, you should pay attention to which address is in the field From is selected as the sender.
SpamExperts does not normally change the IMAP setup #
If SpamExperts Incoming Filtering is used for your domain, this affects the path that incoming messages take before they reach your mail server.
Your iPhone or iPad continues to connect to the mail server of your email account.
That is why you are wearing Do not set up a SpamExperts MX server as an incoming mail server in Apple Mail.
Briefly explained: MX servers and IMAP servers have different tasks. The MX records control where other mail servers send emails for your domain. Your iPhone, on the other hand, retrieves the actual mailbox via IMAP.
SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering as a special case #
If SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering has been explicitly set up for your email account as the outgoing delivery route, the SMTP configuration may differ from the standard CURIAWEB settings.
In this case, use the SMTP data intended for SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering and not automatically mail.your-domain.ch with port 465.
We explain the SpamExperts configuration at Set up SpamExperts Outgoing Filtering.
Remove email account from iPhone or iPad #
If an account was set up completely incorrectly, it can be useful to remove it from the device and then set it up cleanly again.
Go to this:
Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts
Open the relevant account and select the option to delete or remove the account.
Important: Removing an IMAP account from an iPhone or iPad does not delete the actual email account on the CURIAWEB mail server. The configuration is simply removed from the device. Nevertheless, before making any changes, you should ensure that no important data exists exclusively locally on the device.
Set up a new account instead of changing settings on a whim #
If, after several changes, it is no longer traceable which server, port, or security settings Apple Mail is using, a clean re-setup is often more sensible than making further speculative changes.
Check beforehand via webmail whether the e-mail address and password work. Then remove the faulty configuration from the device and set up the account again using the correct CURIAWEB settings.
Common setup errors #
| Problem | Common cause |
|---|---|
| Registration fails | Invalid username or password |
| Email reception is not working | Incorrect IMAP server, port, or access credentials |
| Shipping is not working | Incorrectly configured SMTP server, port, or authentication |
| Certificate warning | Server name might not match the SSL/TLS certificate |
| Webmail works, Apple Mail doesn't | The problem is likely in the configuration on the device |
| No connection after password change | The old password is still saved on the device |
| SpamExperts-MX entered as mail server | MX server was confused with the IMAP/SMTP server |
CURIAWEB settings at a glance #
For the normal setup of a CURIAWEB email address on iPhone or iPad, you use:
Username:
your full email address
Password:
Your email account password
Incoming mail server:
mail.your-domain.ch
IMAP:
Port 993
SSL/TLS
Authentication required
Outgoing mail server:
mail.your-domain.ch
SMTP:
Port 465
SSL/TLS
Authentication required
POP3 is also available encrypted via port 995 available. However, for iPhone, iPad, and use on multiple devices, we recommend IMAP.
Summary #
You can use a CURIAWEB email address directly in the pre-installed Mail app on your iPhone or iPad.
Setup begins at:
Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account
For the standard CURIAWEB configuration, we recommend IMAP over port 993 with SSL/TLS. The incoming mail server follows the scheme mail.your-domain.ch.
